Now is a great time to divide a lot of established perennials, like some of these overgrown monsters in my yard.
The soil is still warm, but the air is getting cooler, which means less stress on the plant above ground and plenty of time for new roots to establish before winter.
A few good candidates to divide now:
Hostas
Daylilies
Yarrow
Comfrey
Bearded iris
Bee balm
Garden phlox
Sedum
And once their foliage begins to yellow, lilies can be lifted and divided too.
Dividing crowded perennials helps rejuvenate the original plant, can improve flowering, and gives you more plants for free.
One big hosta can suddenly become three or four. Move them somewhere new, fill a bare spot, or pass a division along to a friend. 💚
