Knowledge Passed Down. Crafted for Today.

The story of Maskwiomin begins in Mi'kma'ki, where the traditional knowledge of birch bark skincare was nearly lost to time. Preserved through the memories of Elders in Membertou First Nation (one of thirteen Mi’kmaq communities within the province) and revived by Mi'kmaw ethnobotanist Tuma Young, this remarkable tradition has become the foundation of a thoughtfully crafted skincare line. Together with Cape Breton chemist Dr. Matthias Bierenstiel, that knowledge has been respectfully paired with modern research through the Mi'kmaw principle of Etuaptmumk (two-eyed seeing), where Indigenous knowledge and Western science work together.

Handcrafted in Unama'ki (Cape Breton), Maskwiomin's creams and soaps are centred on sustainably harvested birch bark extract, prepared using a proprietary process inspired by the traditional Mi'kmaw campfire method. The formulas combine this extraordinary ingredient with premium natural botanicals and plant-based oils to create gentle, nourishing skincare for dry and sensitive skin.

In Upper Port La Tour, Nova Scotia, farmers Matthew Roy and Cynthia Bazinet are cultivating something truly unique: Canada’s only certified organic black tea and Atlantic Canada’s only saffron. Nestled along the province’s picturesque South Shore, the farm combines innovation, sustainability, and a passion for specialty crops that are rarely grown in Canada.

The farm’s story is a remarkable one. Recognizing that a warming climate could make new crops viable in Atlantic Canada, Roy introduced tea cultivation alongside saffron when he established Coastal Grove Farm in 2020. Today, the farm produces Canada’s only organic black tea, offering tea lovers a truly local and sustainable alternative to imported varieties.

Coastal Grove Farm represents a new chapter in Canadian agriculture. By carefully adapting to changing growing conditions and focusing on high-quality organic production, Roy and Bazinet have created exceptional products that showcase both innovation and the unique potential of Nova Scotia’s climate.
