Our hearts are with the congregation of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue, their families, and the entire Jewish community of Belleville and the Quinte region following the terrifying shooting near the synagogue during Yom Kippur.
A place of worship should always be a place of peace, safety, reflection and community. No one should ever have to fear violence simply because they are gathering to practice their faith.
As a community organization, Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVdP) Belleville stands firmly against hatred and violence in all its forms. We stand beside our Jewish neighbours and friends and want them to know that they are part of our community, and they are not alone.
We also extend our deepest gratitude to the police and emergency responders who put themselves in harm’s way, and we are keeping the injured officer and everyone affected by this traumatic event in our thoughts.
Belleville is a community that cares for one another. Today, we stand together.
