Story of a Dress:
Last summer my good friend Julie Sawchuk and her son Oliver landed non-speaking roles in the film Being Huemann. The film tells the story of Judy Huemann, the American disability rights activist, who staged a sit-in at a federal building in San Francisco on April 5th 1977. The protest demanded the signing of regulations for Section 504, which dealt with the rights of disabled people. The 120 protesters, many of whom were disabled, occupied the space for 25 days and became known as the 504 gang. Their actions led to changes for accessibility rights in the USA.
For Julie, an accessibility advocate herself, participating in a movie that would bring not only this important history, but the challenges faced by disabled people into the forefront of the media, was an incredible opportunity.
I don’t want to give too much away - you need to see this film - but Julie told me that in the process of filming, her own personal story came to light and Julie was suddenly promoted to a speaking role.
Julie is an inspiration to me. Her strength and tenacity with not only dealing with suddenly having to use a wheelchair 11 years ago, but becoming a champion for accessible and universal design, is an impressive force to behold.
When Julie discovered that Being Huemann was the opening film for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), she immediately asked me to find her an outfit. A few weeks later, when our new fully accessible space opened, this dress was on display in the window.
So on opening night of our new accessible space, Julie found her opening night dress.
It fit perfectly. I shortened the hem and made her husband Theo a matching pocket square. Beaded gold earring and a simple gold bracelet were all this spectacular red dress needed to complete the outfit.
Thank you Julie, for your friendship, inspiration and for letting me dress you up. You are beautiful and amazing.

It never fails! We take a photo of a dress and it sells before we can post it.
This dress was in the shop for less than 48 hours.
We restock every day so it never hurts to pop in and see what is new on the floor.
I chose this dress for both the store and a photo post because I love how the white beading creates a sparkly leaf border giving the appearance of a collar, cuffs and a banded hem.
The new owner purchased it to wear to an anniversary party and a wedding. She was looking for two outfits but she fell in love with this one so much, she decided it would be perfect for both.
Maybe she will send pictures…

I had to get outside today.
So of course I trimmed the topiaries.
They were badly neglected this summer due to the renovation but at least I had lots of vines to work with.
Come have fun with them as they also work as a head in hole photo op!

Look what I found just hanging out on a rack, minding its own business.
No on else seemed to know what a prize dress this was.
I casually placed it in my cart while my inner shopper was doing a happy dance.
It is a St. John knit dress.
The fabric was knit in the USA the dress was made in Mexico by St. John.
I have followed St. John knitwear for years. This is the second time I have found a piece out in the wild.
The dress is from the pre autumn collection 2016.
Size 12

Red wooden bead necklace

Story of a dress:
Lissa Kolkman popped in several times this summer to say hi and poke around the shop. Sometimes she found some jewellery to purchase but each time she mentioned she had a wedding at the end of the summer that she wouldn’t mind finding a better dress for.
The day finally arrived that LIssa was ready to don a few dresses. She picked some up and headed to the change room. I suggested this stunning blue sparkly one and she replied “oooo I like that one too.”
Moments later I heard from behind the curtain that “I think this is the one”
It was only then that I discovered that the dress she was looking for was for her son’s wedding. She wanted something that fell a bit more special as the Mother of the Groom.
She opened the curtain and turned to me, tears in her eyes. She was wearing the blue sparkly one.
Yes, this was the dress. It fit perfectly, not a thing had to be adjusted and Lissa was glowing.
Sometimes the dress is just waiting for you.
Lissa thanks for supporting local. It is customers like you who always pop in to say hi and see what’s new that allow independent businesses like us to survive in a rural village.
You look so beautiful. Congrats on your expanding family.

I love dressing people up and making them feel good.
This weekend I altered a dress to make myself feel good. Something I haven’t done in a really long time.
And I did feel good and I enjoyed attending an event for a good cause, with good company.
I am talking about the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital fundraiser for a new MRI machine and ventilator for the Goderich Hospital.
The food was incredible, the entertainment joyful and the commitment of the community to this cause - it blew me away.
I live in a good place.
And now that I have attended this event, I am already planning some great outfits for next year…
