After a month of being a wild cat, living under an overturned canoe with me delivering his meals and trying to coax him to come back in, Hobbes has finally decided to be a house cat again. At least for now. He's filled his belly, annoyed Sam the black cat by trying to cuddle, visited me a bit and is looking for a cozy place to nap. Jake is feeling a little left out at the moment because I left him outside while Hobbes has a while to settle in without being nibbled on by an oversized puppy. Jake displays his affection by nibbling.

*Update* I went into the kitchen after supper and found Hobbes contentedly curled up on a stool there. His hair was all wet and spiky, so he had clearly had a thorough nibbling from his brother Jake, but he was happy as could be about it and had not thought it worth retreating to the basement over.

Jake was gifted with some stuffies. He's working very hard at unstuffing them. They're not ruined when they're empty. He plays with all his empty "bear skins". It can be a messy process getting them properly "fixed" though.

Jake learned a lot on Easter weekend. Car rides are survivable and not as scary as he originally thought. The world is a lot bigger than he thought it was. There are lots of people in it that he had never met before. There is more than one house and you won't die if you go in that other one. You also have to obey Uncle Art. Getting back home is good.

So the most recent count is three "not my cat" cats living in the yard, plus one named Simon that I have a sort of part interest in who is coming and going and my boy Hobbes, at least I thought he was my boy, who has been out there for days hanging with the street gang and refusing to come in. The neighbours across the driveway have an older girl who was napping in the house when I went for coffee earlier. And Sam who must be mellowing in his old age because he's just napping too and says "whatever". Meanwhile Jake the puppy says it's all kind of interesting and worth barking at, but those strange cats are scary.

Hobbes has gone walk-about on me. I didn't think anything of it when I let him follow Sam outside four days ago. But Sam came back without him. He's around. I get glimpses. Also glimpses of Simon who lives at Woodside Cove out behind me. And of a grey and white tuxedo cat that I've never seen before.

Sam has been gone most of the time too, spending a couple nights out lately, but he comes in for supper and a nap before he leaves again. I guess that's the difference between a teen-age boy and a middle aged (or older) old guy like Sam.

It's a sign of spring I guess. Every spring cats I've never seen before start wandering through the yard and my own cats start running a bit wild for awhile.

When this little boy showed up the week before Christmas, he was terrified of me though he would run to Sam or Jake. The only way I was able to catch him before he froze to death with that -30 weather coming in any day, was to get Jake to catch him for me and take him out of Jake's mouth and toss him inside!

Throughout January, he hid out in corners out of sight, sneaking out to eat and drink and to steal some of Jake's smallest toys, which he took to the basement to play with out of sight.

Throughout February, he lived upstairs with us and I could touch him and pick him up, though he cowered away every time I reached for him.

Now suddenly, during the last few days, he's discovered...cuddling with me! I can hardly sit down without Hobbes being on me. I find myself doing things one-handed on the computer because there's this little orange boy cuddled in one elbow, snuggled against my neck and licking my cheek.

His first people might have been pretty awful and tossed him out in a ditch in the winter, but he's finally figured out that some of us are better. But Jake is still his hero for rescuing him.

It's nice when we get one of those "all is calm" interludes. They're starting to happen a little more often and last a little longer as puppy Jake and kitten Hobbes mature. Still not often enough or long enough though, as old Sam (the black cat) will attest!

A neighbour phoned me early this morning to say I should look out my window. There was this young moose, just outside my picture window, pruning my hedge for me. KInd of cool, I thought.

Now that I'm widowed and live alone, I usually eat my supper in my easy chair, plate on my lap, book in one hand, fork in the other. I leave a couple bites for Jake and set my plate down beside my chair when I'm done, for him to clean up. Naturally, he sits very very close and his eyes never leave my fork!

Tonight I sat down with a plate of fish and chips, had a couple bites and the phone rang. I put down the book and started to get up to answer the phone and Jake just sort of...miscalculated. The excitement of thinking I was done and he was getting the whole plate full got the better of him and he snatched a piece of fish from the side of the plate before I put it down. He knew his mistake instantly. The bellow I let out would have clued him in if nothing else.

When I was finished the call and sat down to finish my supper, he sat way across the room looking very sad. But still watching every bite. It was hard to pretend to be mad at him! But I let him worry. I carried that plate with the last couple bites half way to the kitchen before forgiving him and putting it down.

Now he's working on being a good dog. At least for the next while.

Well, isn't Hobbes looking just cozy?
