Small Steps Soap Co. Locally sourced ingredients mean our old fashioned soap and body products are one small step closer Luckily for me she wasn't having any of that.

A little over three years ago my daughter asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. As I looked at her I realized she was serious, she wanted to know what I wanted out of life. My answer was honest but was accompanied by as many excuses as I could quickly come up with. I started to think about it, I thought about my excuses, my passions, what really matters to me and what do I want to be when I

grow up. I thought a lot about what I have to offer all of you and I slowly came to realize that what I have to offer is my passion and drive to change the world through a series of small steps. Now more than ever the choices we make at home have a huge impact on our world and our earth. Every time we make sure to remember the reusable bags, the reusable coffee cup or water bottle. Every time we stop at that cute little farm stand for some strawberries or to buy local honey we are changing the world by supporting small scale sustainable agriculture. We can choose to buy our produce and our meat directly from our local farmers. We can really take the buy local movement to a new level. At Small steps Soap Co. all of our products are not only locally handmade they are made with at least 75% locally grown, raised or sourced ingredients. Exotic butters and oils can be lovely to use, but more and more we are seeing the controversy regarding the sustainability of their farming practices, the horrible treatment of impoverished workers are coming to light. I know exactly where my ingredients come from. I talk with and meet the people who are growing and raising them, I have been to their farms. As we get going here I will introduce them to you as well. So now here we are, this may look like a giant leap but it is anything but. This has been thousands of smalls steps, a few big steps, a couple of bigger steps backwards and even some falling down. My daughter is still my biggest cheerleader and there truly is no better reward than that, not even changing the world.

Treehugger is FINALLY back in stock and I wanted to share a little about this popular bar. Treehugger is special to me, it was the first bar I made to be sold at Meuse Brewing Company . When I approached Estelle about making soap with their beer the first thing she asked me was where I'm located. I was so happy to realize that local matters to Meuse. They were the first business I had approached that not only understood how much local ingredients matter for me but they were very excited about it too. Now, I not only use their beer in most of my Beer Line but I also use their free range eggs.
Treehugger contains 85% local, simple ingredients, sourced directly within 100km of where I live. Treehugger is currently available for Pre Order with orders shipping June 21st. It is also available as part of our first Soap Flight.
These bars went very quickly last time, pre order will ensure you get a bar this time.

This weather has been crazy but I'm not complaining, I am absolutely blown away at what I've been able to harvest from my gardens already! Fresh Roses, so much Yarrow, Lavender, tons of mint (of course), Rosemary, Lemon Balm and my personal favourite, fragrant Honeysuckle. I have a lot hydrosol to make this week, next week that hydrosol will be used in our lotions. I grow all of this myself, make all of the hydrosol and extracts and then hand craft all of my products.
Next week I will introduce you to my lotion line, Simply Wild, Sandalwood, Hopulence and Wild Gardener, scented with proprietary blends in a range of scents.

This photo captured a moment, a realization, that set me on this path. Our family had just moved across the country, again, at a time when I was suffering a huge personal loss and facing another big health scare with my mom. It was a difficult time where I found myself feeling so lost in this province, my home, that I had been so desperate to return to. There wasn't a day that went by that I didn't question myself and think I had made a huge mistake with this move.
And then one spectacular Southern Ontario evening in July, crazy humidity, thunder rolling off in the distance, my daughter and I were going to visit my mom at Hamilton General. I was trying to enjoy the moment with my daughter, to stay positive, it wasn't easy, I pulled into a parking spot and this was right in front of me. This sunflower growing out of cracked pavement between these cement blocks, just absolutely perfect. If that little seed, just dropped there, could flourish in that environment, I could flourish in mine.
I love making the products that I make, I am passionate about the need to use our local resources, but what it really comes down to is that I am passionate about Southern Ontario and the immense beauty and bounty we are surrounded by. I feel so lucky to be here, to be collecting my ingredients from local farmers, local breweries, learning of their passions and how they intersect my own. I still can't believe that this is my job. So thank you, so very much for continuing to make this possible, for giving me this space to flourish. It hasn't been easy, but every day I tell myself "I will make this worth it".

Simply Wild restock will be ready in a few weeks. This one has been very popular so we wanted to give you some insight on how we make this gorgeous floral body bar. Simply Wild is made using a local Farmhouse Ale, we start by boiling down the beer to reduce the alcohol content and get the carbonation out. Then we freeze it before combining with the lye. For this formula we add madder root powder directly to the lye solution, I always just love the deep colour the solution becomes. We combine this solution with our fats and blend. Watching the colours swirl around before they emulsify is always a pleasure for me. Once everything has come together we pour it and decorate the tops. This is a simple, elegant soap with only one colour so I add a little variance by lightening the top portion just slightly using Kaolin Clay, this also adds a silky, creaminess to the finished product. After 24 hours we cut into bars, cure for a few days, stamp them, then back to the curing rack for a minimum of four weeks.
I just love this scent, Lavender, Jasmine, Rose, dark Patchouli and Sandalwood it's lightly floral, not at all overwhelming with a deep body. Definitely
Made with 80% local ingredients including H**p Seed Oil and local craft ale, this is a truly local soap!

This is a tiny little test batch of coconut oil free soap, I've been working hard behind the scenes to perfect a method that will allow me to produce a fabulous lather with 90% local ingredients!
Coconut oil is generally what gives our soap and detergent their lather. Unfortunately North American demand on coconut oil is causing problems on the other side of the world, monoculture, clearing of precious rainforests, sometimes abhorrent working conditions and the enslavement of people and monkeys for harvest. I have always used fair trade coconut oil, but unfortunately these terms we've come to rely on are getting murky so I am taking this small step to lessen the burden.
I really think this formula is the one, I'll know in about 5 weeks and I am so very excited!

This is one of our home made Bee Baths, so very simple to make. You'll just need a shallow dish and some small rocks for the Bee's and other insects to perch on while they drink. Fill the dish part way with water, be sure not to submerge the rocks completely. You will need to change the water fairly regularly, daily is best, but if you don't have the time change it as often as you're able. We aren't perfect and every small step we can take to support these amazing and invaluable creatures is a step worth taking!
Just like every other living thing on this earth, BEES NEED WATER. Please take a few minutes to put something like this together, this is a great project for children! Our Bee friends do so much for us, we can do this for them!!
If you decide to make one of these (or more if you're feeling up to it) please share and tag us so we can share to inspire others.
