What do you call a bargain on top of a bargain? A Daisy deal, that's what. Our half price sale on all clothing continues, making this the third week of our doozy of a Daisy deal. Take heed though, this could be the final week. Just sayin'.

Bargains on clothing may be one reason to come to the Daisy, but there are lots of others too. Like a card table and four chairs for $30. A spare table is always handy during the summer.
Spare dishes are also useful in the summer when the extended family descends en masse. We have three sets: a 60 piece set by Wedgewood in bone china. It's white with a design of stylized grass in gold scattered around the edges. $140. A second set by Royal Doulton with a "Vintage Grape" design is $25, and a very pretty 4 place setting by Stokes in their "Elegance" design is also $25.

A couple of sets of bedding make it easy to freshen up the look of a bedroom. One is a double coverlet with 2 matching shams. Made to resemble a vintage quilt, it has scalloped edges and decorative stitching. The solid colour is a lovely sage green. $20. A duvet cover for a double/queen size bed also has a pair of matching shams. The pattern is black birds perched in trees of pale grey. $10.

If you're looking for art there is a large painting of a loon on a lake. $20. Nearby on the wall above the card table, an enigmatic painting of a white rowboat stranded on a beach is $12.
An oval coffee table in solid oak in good condition, is $60. A basket of silverware is $30, and a mirror framed in rose gold glass is $20.
A couple of standouts in women's clothing, like a beautiful coat by Bianca Nygard. Made with a lightweight pure wool in pale lilac, this coat has a wide collar, large buttons and button detailing on the cuffs. Size 12. Next to it, a floaty 3 piece ensemble in dusky rose. Pants, top and a jacket make this a perfect outfit for a special evening out. $20. Pair it with the shawl we found to drape around the shoulders. $5.

A selection of books by Guidepost, publisher of inspiring Christian themed books. Some of the titles include "Tales from Grace Chapel", "Mysteries of Sparrow Island", and "Home to Heather Creek". These hardcover books are $3 each and are in excellent condition.

No washing line. No problem. We have a collapsible clothes dryer. Perfect small spaces. It's sturdy and can handle lots of laundry. $5.
In children's, a stroller by 3Dlite. $20. And shoes, sandals and
boots for tiny tots, cute as can be. $2 and up.

A note to keep in mind...when the heat goes up, the Daisy may close. Our air conditioning system leaves a lot to be desired, especially for you, our customers and our hard working volunteers. The heat can make it like an oven inside the Daisy. So until our AC is fixed, you may find we're closed until the temperature cools down.

Now enjoy our bargains...they're hot.

A new show and new mediums to check out at The Shore Line Gallery-South Shore Regional Hospital, on now at the South Shore Regional Hospital.

Along with the watercolours and acrylics, there are three works that utilize glass to create an image.

Janet Thompson weaves glass strips the same way a weaver uses fibre to make cloth, with vertical warp strips interwoven with horizontal or weft strips. The glass ribbons are wide, imagine pappardelle, and colourful. Some are translucent, others solid, and some have other colours running through them. These works are sculptural.

The ribbons curve and bulge as they weave in and out, light reflecting on their glossy surfaces.
Thompson has three pieces in the show: “Tides of Home”, “Waves by the Tide”, and “Healing Harbour Knits”, a witty reference to a couple of knitting needles included in it.

D. C, Maclean uses pencil and crayon on paper to create images that feel softly atmospheric yet precise. The air is clear in “Peggy’s Cove - Fall”, and sharp in “Burnt Cove Head, October”. The colour of the beach in “Burnt Cove Head” is a warm orange layered with the pale blue of a retreating tide.

Two figures head along the beach into the distance.

In “Upper LaHave, Sunset”, the water is a molten stream of orange, reflecting the last of the sunset above. Evening clouds are pushing into the sky and the riverbank is dark already.

Both these artists are part of the latest exhibition at Shore Line Gallery. Take some time to visit the show and enjoy the creativity on display there.

It's raining today..and the rest of the week doesn't scream "beach weather" but soon we'll be complaining about the heat. So be prepared for a dip in the ocean or a swim in the lake with one (or two, or maybe many) swimsuits. We have a large selection of brand new swimwear (tags are still attached) made by Anita and Rosa Faia. Our prices are super reasonable so they are not part of our sale.

The half price sale on clothing continues this week. This includes men's wear and children's clothing. Shoes are not part of it, but they are still a great bargain. There are dressy sandals and everyday sandals, cute little flats and sensible sneakers. Feets don't fail me now.

A table hockey game to fill the hours between playoff games has been reduced. It is now $150 and located next to the cashier. The players are in the display cabinet. Relive the big goals long after the Stanley Cup is over.

More games for old fashioned family fun. Remember Scrabble? Battleship? Monopoly? If you haven't played lately, go directly to jail, or pick up one of our games for just $2.

Inspired by the ocean, a set of four placemats and napkins of a whale printed in navy blue, is $8. Some extra large cotton napkins sporting an embroidered nautical motif are $2 each. Perfect for serving lobster on your yacht.

Three figurines by Emma Jane's Babies are priced from $3 to $5. And a summery spray of tall yellow flowers is $15. The vase is not included.

A little trike for a little tike. This 3-wheeler is by Radio Flyer. It has a carrier on the back for cookies. It's red and it's new. $50.
Also this week, lots of bedding, including a queen size comforter, shams and pillow cases in a dark maroon design for $12. And some smart looking picture frames for your photos or artwork, $1 to $6.

The Daisy is your frame of reference for the best bargains in town.

This month’s exhibit at The Shore Line Gallery-South Shore Regional Hospital includes paintings with quintessential Nova Scotia elements: fishing boats, wharves, and the sea.

Ivan Carey was the Featured Artist last month. His “Nobody Home”, shows a fishing boat passing by an old house on the shore. It looks abandoned. Shingles are missing from the roof and part of an outer wall appears to have collapsed. What was probably an idyllic spot at one time now has a nostalgic feel.

Mike Hatcher has two paintings in the show. For anyone who enjoys the ocean, his “Morning Surf” and “The Rock” will be an instant reminder of the beauty of our coastline.

“Morning Surf” captures the moment a wave breaks as it rolls ashore. “The Rock” shows a granite outcrop along the coast. The grey of the rock contrasts with the golden browns of the seaweed growing on it, grey and gold surrounded by the blue of the sea.

Dennis Curran is also fascinated by the waves coming ashore. His watercolour “Viridian and Blue” is named for the colours of a wave crashing onto rocks. It has that fresh feel of an ocean breeze.

“Tiny Harbour” is another of Curran’s watercolours. He uses the medium to beautiful effect to show the route the ocean takes to a small staging where a fishing boat is tied up.

A different fishing boat plows its way through the waves in one of Greg Van De Moortele’s highly coloured pictures. “Heading Home” is one of two works of his in the show. The other, “Nesting” is an overhead view of waves rolling onto a beach.

The nest belongs to a couple of seagulls who occupy a cliff far above the waves that curl eternally to shore.

A final look at seaside buildings at the Shore Line Gallery is by Daphne Strowbridge. Her simple painting “Shacks at Blue Rocks” should be familiar to anyone living on the South Shore. Rust coloured huts sit above a wharf that juts into the sea.

With better weather people will be out driving along the coast. Many of the scenes they will see have already been portrayed by the artists at the Shore Line Gallery.

Come in and compare what you see with the artists’ renderings. This show continues until the end of the month.

The big news at the Daisy this week is that ALL clothing is half price. There is lots of new summer stock on the racks, so the sale is perfectly timed for you to pick up everything you need for this fabulous weather.

And with this week's heat you can pretend you're in a Mexican mariachi band with our authentic Pigalle black and white sombrero. $10. A woven wool mat depicts a scene from a Mexican village with haciendas, cactus and a beautiful big church. $10.

As the battle for the Stanley Cup heats up, a table hockey game by STIGA will let you compete like the pros. It's by STIGA, their High Speed Edition and it's new. The players are included. You can find them in the display case next to the cashier. $200.

Also next to the cashier, a binder filled with vintage money from around the world. It's in the jewelry case. $200.

A very pretty dinner service by Henry Alcock Company of England decorated with dainty flower sprigs is $35. The set is incomplete but has dinner plates, soup bowls and tureens.

If you think prices were cheaper back in the day, take a peek at the old Eaton's catalogue we have. It's from 1975 and it's surprising to see that Daisy prices are considerably less than those in the catalogue. Check out the fashions too...retro and contemporary at the same time. $5.

Despair not. If all this rain is making you despondent, head over to the Daisy for an instant lift. Spirits will soar when you see all the fantastic finds, from home decor to personal decoration.

Home finds first - like the charming solid wood magazine stand. It has a handy shelf for a cup of tea. $15. An antique ladder-back rocking chair with a cane seat is all you need to spend a few lazy hours on the deck this summer. $40. Transform any room with a stained glass picture. Ours has a floral design in a wood frame. Hang it in a window and watch this luminous artwork colour the day. $50.

There are lots more desirable items for the home, including a huge landscape somewhere in Europe. At $20 it's a cheap way to dream of travelling. There's also a print of several schooners, including the Bluenose, sailing in Lunenburg Harbour. It is an Open Edition print by William Gilkerson. $25.

For something completely different on a wall or front door, a vibrant, peacock-inspired mesh wreath in shades of purple, turquoise and lime. $12.

Summer means visitors. Prepare to entertain holiday guests with a set of Royal Albert bone china. The pattern is "Petit Point". It's cheerful and pretty. $30.

For personal decoration, it's hard to beat a necklace by Kate Spade. We have two, one with green coloured stones, the other with deep orange. Super stylish and absolute knockouts. The orange one is $30, the green, $25.

If you're looking for a prom dress or know someone who is, we have fantastic party frocks like the mini dress covered in oversized silver sequins. There are more, along with tuxedos and dress suits. Ask one of our volunteers for help if you're looking for a suit. We have lots out back.

The Daisy also has lots of useful items, like an office chair that's sturdy and comfortable. $25. Or a giant platter for $5. A garment steamer for $25...it's easier than ironing. And a Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner that takes some of the drudgery out of vacuuming. $15.

There are some new artists at The Shore Line Gallery-South Shore Regional Hospital to check out.

Using different media they offer a fresh take on familiar themes…like D. C. MacLean’s “LaHave River, Autumn”. The artist uses marker, pencil and crayon to portray a view from the river’s edge.

The strong verticals of three trees cut through the horizontal river lines. The opposite river bank adds its own horizontal feel, with the clouds above scudding on their own parallel course.

Louise Hollingsworth’s “Have Patients” is unique in this month’s
exhibit. A dramatic piece that is sculptural, with white faces mounted on a black background.

The faces are three dimensional and resemble masks. Each has its own expression but do not seem to be actual portraits.

The title is a puzzle. Are the faces different expressions of patience, or are they patients waiting to see someone?

April Naugler has exhibited with Shore Line before. She has two works in this month’s show. Both are abstracts in resin on wood.

Highly glossy, they look like sediment swirling in a river or a segment of a rocky deposit. One is called “Lava”, the other is “Purple Explosion”. Both are vehicles for imagination and contemplation.

You can see these works at the Shore Line Gallery until the end
of the month.

The Shore Line Gallery-South Shore Regional Hospital has a new show and a new Feature Artist. She is Kathryn Price.

She lives on a small hobby farm outside New Germany and started painting seriously when she retired twenty six years ago.

Kathryn says she has always liked art, visiting galleries and cathedrals to look at paintings on her travels. Mostly self taught, she has taken the occasional course at the Nova
Scotia College of Art and Design.

Mostly though, she has been inspired by Mary Morey, who is part of an art group which meets every Monday morning at the Union Square Hall.

Enthralled by Morey’s work, Price
says Morey encouraged her to keep painting and exhibit her work.

Like Morey, Price paints in oils. She likes the medium because the colours stay true, unlike acrylics which she says darken as they dry. Also oils let her return to a painting
later to make changes.

The works on display at Shore Line are mostly landscapes. Price says many of the subjects are scenes she finds on her hikes. She takes a small camera with her to record what she sees so she can paint a scene later, like “Out Exploring” and “Summer Pleasures”. Both are wide vistas of water, forest and sky.

“Early Morning on Cape Chignecto” shows the rocky terrain and headlands of that part of the province.

Price loves nature. Trees are a big favourite. Her “Mother and Daughter” shows two maples. The leaves in one are gradually changing colour while the smaller tree is totally red. Another favourite is the little bunchberry plant. In her
painting “Canadian Bunchberry”, the plants are shown later in the season with their familiar red berries. Price loves the contrast between the red and the green.

“Magical Homestead” seems different from her other paintings. It has many of the things found in those works - landscape, sky and a wide view, but it is also a work of
imagination. Price says it was inspired by her place but the huge sky with its dramatic red clouds looming over a small house nestled in the trees, gives this painting an emotional edge. Security, isolation, eternal.

You can find Kathryn Price’s work this month at the Shore Line Gallery located in the main hallway of the South Shore Regional Hospital.

Big art. Big prom dresses. Big gift basket. And big savings at the Daisy this week.

First, the big art - like a big, blue painting. It's not from Picasso's blue period but you might feel you can dive right into this ocean of colour. $10. An abstract of circles on a background of oranges and browns makes it easy to highlight a room. $10. And a large watery landscape could be the backdrop for a new approach in home decor for you. $15.

A big selection of prom and party dresses to start you dreaming of the big night. Various prices and sizes. All gorgeous.

A big gift basket that's very special, filled with things to make a person feel especially pampered. $18.

Perfect for a meal on a summer day, a 50 piece table setting in sky blue and white with gold trim. $40. Separate pieces in the same pattern are individually priced.

Eight small sculptures by Danbury Mint called "Lighthouse Point", all intricately detailed and hand painted. $10 to $15.

An electric lamp styled to look like an old oil lamp is $35. There are several other lamps, including two tall brass table lamps. All are in working order.

A fantastic bargain in bedding - a boho printed microfiber comforter set, comes with 2 fitted sheets, 2 flats and pillowcases. Like new by Intelligent Design Odette. $30.

Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but if you can't afford them, how about cubic zirconia? They look just like the real thing. We have two sterling silver rings set with these sparkly stones. $30 each.

A set of books based on the role playing game Dungeons and Dragons. They recreate the adventure fantasy world in full colour. A couple of the titles are "Tomb of Annihilation" and "Waterdeep. Dragon Heist". There are more. Each book is priced individually.

In the children's section, a Jolly Jumper in good condition is $10. It's a shame these aren't made in grown up sizes. Everyone likes to bounce around and have fun, don't they? And by Tiny Love, a cradle that gently rocks your baby to sleep. In red and in good condition. $10.

And finally, if you have trouble sleeping and a rocking cradle won't work for you.. maybe a Sony DVP-FX755 will do the trick. It plays CDs and DVDs and features a 7-inch widescreen LCD monitor. It comes with its original charging battery which is rated for 3 hours of playback time, so you can stay up late, late, late. It comes with an AC power adapter. Also included is a terrific carrying case from Case Logic with padded compartments for the device, and for discs and accessories. Device and case $30.

All this and lots more at the Daisy, your favourite thrift store.
