A few weeks back, a potential customer, Jane, called looking for a very specific item to match a current item she was already using for years in her quest to feed the birds. Jane was lovely, but in a unique set of circumstances that prevented her from doing all the things so many of us do online. The item in question was out of stock and I still had old stock on hand, thankfully - it wasn’t completely perfect but I suggested it could be “MacGyvered” in order to make the bracket usable in the manner she needed. The problem was she wasn’t sure if it would work and wanted to see the item first. Travelling to us was out of the question. She doesn’t travel far these days.

In the world of backyard birding retail we have many competitors but we all share a common goal - to help others experience the joy of feeding wild birds in our backyard. And to that end I hatched a plan. Enlisting Rob, our delivery guy from Wild Bird Trading , I gave him the item needed and had him deliver it the following week to Avant-Garden Shop in Peterborough during his usual route to them on Tuesdays before he comes to us. The fine folks at Avant Garden made themselves available to Jane to show her the item she had combed Canada for.

And guess what? It worked! Jane saw the wisdom of what I felt could be accomplished in the not quite so matching but matching enough product and took it home. Everybody wins! And amazingly Jane purchased a cute little thank you gift for me (which was definitely not a requirement!) but thank you! She sent me a little KE Studio Fused Glass Bird from Avant Garden and the sweetest thank you note.

So see? Even in a world of competition, a little collaboration can go a long way to making someone immensely happy and hopefully a lifelong customer at one or both businesses.

That’s a massive win in my books.

Updated - just added today’s pic - the flower is just eager to follow the sun!

Nature is pretty incredible. If you look closely, you’ll see a sunflower growing out of the hand. We’ve tried planting a few plants in the space and had minimal success - last year we had to abandon plans to plant anything for a dove that burst out of the space from nesting and nearly sent Andrew off the tall ladder in an ungraceful manner ! This year we hadn’t quite made it so far and assumed it would be used for nesting. So imagine our surprise when this green plant started growing. We left it alone to see what it would turn into and the larger it got we started to have our own suspicions. It opened up a few days ago, confirming what we thought. A sunflower likely planted by bird or squirrel or chipmunk. Frankly I’m quite pleased at their choice of plant - it couldn’t be more fitting really.

We have a local butter business who is in desperate need of support and assistance. Please either stock up and buy their incredible butter at a farmers market or consider donating to help them survive this crisis. I know them personally and they are incredibly hard working and it breaks my heart to see this latest hardship that they have run into. Some people have the worst of luck.

Their business motto has been to “Spread Love Like Butter!” and right now they could use several thousand pounds of love coming back to them. Honestly they are likely to need more than what they are humbly asking for.

Sending much love their way and so much hope for their future. ❤️

Update: She is doing well and coming home after 4pm! Thanks to Presqu'ile Animal Hospital for the love and care given to her. ❤️🦮❤️

We are going to be missing Sadie in store today as she is headed to Presqu’ile vets to have a tumor removed from her ear. So the boys will accepting all her treats on her behalf today. We found this bump a short time ago and thanks to the quick intervention of her vets it will soon be a thing of the past.
