Almost as iconic as the city itself, The Canadian National Exposition has become the largest annual exposition to run in Canada annually. The success of a small traveling agricultural fair that first landed in Toronto in 1846 was the spark that’s led to this annual Toronto tradition.
Pictured here is a fantastic medal from the 1928 fair. This beautiful medal has unfortunately been oddly difficult to research. With this particular example being awarded to Harold Thomas Miles, for his proficiency on the piano, one could assume this type would have been issued for a multitude of different events. I don’t doubt there are quite a few of this medal floating around, what’s strange however is the lack of information or references to this type online and in archives. Through my search I was only able to find two other examples, both awarded in events separate from the piano noted on my example. I’d love to hear if any of you have handled this type, or have one in your collection!
An undeniably beautiful design, this medal had been engraved by Emmanuel Hahn, a name many of you will have known from his extensive work with the Royal Canadian Mint.
With currently set up until September the 5th, I’m contemplating swinging by and seeing if they can allow me access to some of their archives, which have unfortunately not been transcribed well online. Hopefully allowing some light to be shed on the mystery surrounding this fantastic piece!
