I notice the pull back when I bring Jacob up.
I see it. I feel it.

The half second where someone’s face changes. The way the conversation gets carefully redirected.
The people who ask how I’m doing but never say his name.
I know it comes from love.
Nobody wants to be the one who undoes me in the middle of a normal Tuesday.
But I’m already there.
I was thinking about him before you walked up.
I’ll be thinking about him after you leave.

Saying Jacob doesn’t remind me of anything I’d forgotten.
It just tells me I’m not the only one still keeping him here.

When something is actually good, and I feel it rising in me the way it used to.
And then it stops.

Right there.
Like it hits glass.

I remember.

I tried to remember this is just what love looks like when someone is missing from it.

The ceiling isn't me failing.
It's me carrying him into every good moment I have left.
Every single one.

If your joy has a limit now too, I totally get you. 💕

Nobody sees the version of this story we live in every single day.

To you, it’s a headline. A sad post. A moment you scroll past.
To us, it’s the life we wake up inside of, every single morning, for the rest of ours.

And some days it still feels unbearable to think about.
That this sadness isn’t something we get through. It’s something we carry for the rest of our lives.

People assume Mexico has been “healing.”
It’s not that simple.

In Canada, everything held him.
The things he touched.
The places we went.
The path we used to walk…

Every single day was proof that he was here.
And now he’s not.
Here, none of that exists. Jacob was never on this beach. He was never here.

So it doesn’t feel lighter because I’m grieving him less.
It feels lighter because nothing here is screaming “he’s missing” every time I walk somewhere.

And that’s its own kind of painful, honestly.
I want to remember him every single day.
I never want to forget a single thing about him.
But being in the spaces where he actually was... some days that’s more than I can hold.

I still bring him with me everywhere.
That never changes.
It’s just different, carrying him somewhere he never got to be, instead of everywhere he used to be.
