Benefits of a designated play area!⠀
⠀
“Play is the work of the child” - Maria Montessori⠀
⠀
I totally agree with her and believe it is our responsibility as parents to create an environment where a child has freedom to choose what they play. ⠀
⠀
Through my experience of raising a 3 and a 1 year old, I’ve learned that having a dedicated play space is really beneficial for a child in many ways. ⠀
⠀
We are fortunate enough to dedicate one full room as a playroom where my boys spend most of their day playing, learning, fighting, reading, and making memories.⠀
⠀
Now, a play area doesn’t have to be like that. It can simply be a corner of a room where the toys and books are nicely displayed for them to access “any time” of the day. The intention is not how “big” the playroom is but to have an area that is 100% toddler friendly. ⠀
⠀
So, why do I think that a dedicated play space is so important for a child?⠀
⠀
Below are the reasons that I personally have experienced:⠀
⠀
1. Independence - when we put toys and books at a child’s level, it gives them the freedom to choose what they wish to play with or read and when! Just because you have some time between chores and are ready to play or do an activity with your child doesn’t mean the child also wants to do that particular activity at that time. Allowing them the freedom to choose what they want to play with feeds their desire of having control but within limits and maximizes their imagination and development. There are some days when after having breakfast, both kids will go to their playroom to play without me giving any direction. ⠀
2. Decision making - with the toys and books nicely displayed at the child’s level, it gives them opportunities to practice decision making every day. I always ask what they want to play with or read and G will look around and take his time to process it and tell me his decision. And when we honour their decision, they feel confident in their decisions. ⠀
3. Controlled screen time - Having a play area without a tv combined with frequent toy rotations is a huge huge blessing. Toy and book rotations help keep things fresh and “new” in the playroom. Sometimes, even when the tv is on, the boys
