Usborne 1000 Things that go

If you have a trucks loving toddler, you cannot go wrong with this book. Our boys (5 and 2.5) love going through this book and taking about each truck/machine/car/train. This is a board book with lots of pages filled with rows and rows of things that go.

Skyscraper by Hurley, Jorey

This hardcover picture book has one of the most elegant book covers I’ve ever seen. This is a book about the process of building a skyscraper. Each page has a single word written like push and dump with an illustration for the word. It wasn’t quite what I expected when I ordered this book. Both our boys do not seem to be very interested to read this after the first time we read it together. Our 5 year old was not impressed as it did not offer him much to read. Would I order this book for my boys again ? Probably not. However, if I had to stage my house or display some books to make my place seem classy, I would absolutely put this book on view.

Book Review #7

If you are related to Canada in any way and have little ones in your life, then this book is for you. It’s all things Canadian . Maple, Zamboni, July 1, Ottawa, Stampede, Hockey, Loonie... Only missing reference was to Tim Hortons. The colours are pleasant and the illustrations are beautiful.

Calgary Public Library has copies of this book.

Usborne big machines Diggers and Cranes

Book Review #6

This book is probably couple of decades old . Nevertheless, it’s a favourite in our truck loving house. we have owned this books for about 3 years now and our boys still reach out to this book almost everyday . Our middle one who is 2.5 years old and cannot read yet , loved looking at the pictures . He can name probably 50 trucks while still refusing to identify the letters of the alphabet. This is a softcover book with few pages . Each page has a machine with a few details of what the machine does . It’s pretty interesting even for an adult.

You would probably only find this book in a thrift store , but if you do come across it, grab it .

Our recommendation: 👍🏼

Book Review #5: (DK) How to soccer. A step by step guide to mastering the skills

This is an awesome book. I’m not a soccer person but our 5 year old has recently been obsessed with the sport. He has been devouring this book everyday . He’s been reading this book by himself and often comes to me to explain something that he read about in that book . So, for the first time , I actually opened this book to see its contents . I was impressed . Lots of pictures and simple language . Very basic instructions. Perfect for a little soccer fan or an older kid that wants to learn about the sport or even for a mom that knows nothing about the sport .

Having three boys , we love all things trucks. We always used to borrow the mighty machine series books by Ian Graham from our local library. This hardcover book is a collection of books Bikes, Cars, Trains, Tractors, Firetrucks, Dump Trucks and Monster Trucks. Each page consists of a large picture and a little write up about the subject . Perfect for younger kids who can read and also for kids that don’t read yet but love looking at the pictures . Perfect for parents like me who love to read to their kids but don’t want to end up reading long sentences.

ABC Dinosaurs (American Museum and Natural History)

We absolutely love this board book . We read it with our oldest and now we are reading it with our middle one.

This is a wonderful book for toddlers that love dinosaurs. The letters are big and easy for focusing. The last page has directions on how to sound out each dinosaur name . At the end of reading this book, we always play a game of asking my toddler to point out the letters as I randomly call them out .

We read and own lots of other dinosaur books that have better pictures of dinosaurs than this book but it has not stopped us from reading this book again and again.

Verdict : 👍🏼

Book Review : Push! Dig! Scoop!

This is a great book that combines counting and construction vehicles. We read this tonight with our toddler for the first time and it was a success. Our toddler loved counting and I’m sure we will be reading this book over and over again in the coming days .

Verdict : Thumbs up.

Unfortunately, we don’t carry it yet in our store but our Calgary Public Library has a few copies of this book.

Book Review: scholastic Children’s Dictionary

I sometimes struggle with explaining simple words to a 5 year old. That’s why I love having this dictionary on hand. it’s colourful , simple and easy to read. We have found an explanation every word that we have looked for and I constantly find myself amazed at how simple and well worded the explanations are .

Verdict: Thumbs up

We currently don’t carry any in our store but if you come across this dictionary, grab it.

Note: while it is definitely easier to google the word for its meaning , I purposefully try to steer my boys towards a physical dictionary. Opening a book and finding a word is an unique experience.
