This past weekend we held a garage sale. We HAD to.

We were up until 3:30am getting it ready — because when you're building something from scratch, that's the only time left in the day for everything else.

Watching strangers walk away with things we'd held onto for years — things that meant something to us at one point — I realized something.

This is exactly what building Modern Whisk has felt like.

Letting go of comfort. Security. The life that looked good from the outside. Willingly. Because what we're building matters more than what we're releasing.

My wife Melody has been battling gluten intolerance and autoimmune issues since the mid 90's. She tried every product on the market. Every single one was just "good enough" at best.

So she stopped waiting and built something better herself.

I looked at what she created and knew immediately — the world needs this.

So we went to work.

We're not here to chase a trend.
We're here to kill a stigma.

The idea that gluten-free means less flavour, less quality, less joy.
We're destroying that completely.

We're moving into a new facility now. Lighter. Leaner. Locked in.

Some months feel like progress. Some feel like survival.
Both are building something.

One day this becomes the story of why we quit — or the story of why we didn't.

We've already decided which one we're writing.

This past weekend we held a garage sale. We HAD to.

We were up until 3:30am setting it up — because that’s the only time left in the day when you’re building something real.

And standing there watching strangers find joy in things we’d been holding onto — it hit us.

This is exactly what building Modern Whisk has felt like.

You let go of financial comfort. Gone.
You let go of leisure time. Gone.
You let go of the version of yourself that played it safe.

Not because it doesn’t hurt.
Because what you’re building matters more than what you’re releasing.

Since the mid 90’s Melody’s body has been at war with gluten. She tried everything out there. Every product let her down.

So she stopped waiting for someone to fix it.
She fixed it herself.

And we burned our comfortable life down to make sure the world found out about it.

Four mixes. Endless possibilities. Zero apologies.

We’re not chasing a trend.
We’re killing a stigma.

We’re stepping into a new facility now.
Lighter. Leaner. Locked in.

One day this becomes the story of why we quit.
Or the story of why we didn’t.

We’ve already decided which one we’re writing.

Edmonton… wow. 💚

Yesterday at the Beyond Wheat Celiac Conference, we arrived with 120 mixes and headed home with just 9.

(And if we hadn’t forgotten samples for one mix… we’re pretty sure those would’ve gone too. 😅)

But the sales weren’t the best part.

You were.

The conversations.
The stories.
The parents navigating new diagnoses.
The adults sharing years of frustration, exhaustion, and the reality of gluten-free living.

And the best part?

That moment after the first bite when someone pauses, looks up, and says:

“Wait… this is gluten free?!”

That’s why Modern Whisk exists.

A huge thank you to Edmonton for welcoming us so warmly and for every person who stopped by to chat, sample, share their story, or take us home to their kitchen.

And to Leanne - what an exceptional event. Beautifully organized, an incredible venue, and a speaker lineup tackling conversations that truly matter that more non-GF people need to hear:

Most gluten-free baking still has a reputation problem.

Too Dry.

Too sweet.
“We swear it tastes good” energy.

And honestly?
People have been disappointed so many times that we don’t even blame them anymore.

That’s exactly why we built Modern Whisk differently—small-batch mixes made right here in Alberta focused on flavour FIRST.

Not “good for gluten-free.”
Just ridiculously good baking. Period.

And now you can officially find us at The Farm Table in Carstairs.

If you know the shop, you already know:
this isn’t some random stop-and-go store.

we’re pretty pumped to be on those shelves.

To the heart behind the whisk.

Today we celebrate our Modern Mama — Melody.
The woman who somehow pours love into every bag, every bake, every market, every late night, every “we can figure this out,” and every impossible moment that turned into magic anyway.

Modern Whisk wouldn’t feel the same without her warmth, grit, creativity, and the kind of care you can actually taste.

And to all the mamas out there — the nurturers, the builders, the comfort-makers, the lunch-packers, the chaos coordinators, the strong shoulders, the safe places, the women holding entire worlds together while somehow still showing up with love…

We see you.
We appreciate you.
And we adore you.

Today is for the moms making memories around kitchen tables, licking batter off spoons, dancing through messy mornings, and turning ordinary moments into the ones we remember forever.

Another huge milestone for Modern Whisk!0

You can now find us on the shelves at — one of Calgary’s long-standing dedicated gluten-free bakeries that has been serving the gluten-free community for years.

Honestly, this one means a lot to us.

When you build a gluten-free brand, being welcomed into a space that has earned trust within the celiac and gluten-free community is something special. Miss P’s has built a reputation around safe, delicious gluten-free baking and creating a place people can truly rely on.

We’re incredibly grateful to now be a small part of that.

And May is the perfect time for it too — with so many amazing local gluten-free businesses coming together in support of Celiac Awareness Month. ❤️
