ST. JOHN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL // Did you know St. John Elementary School has been standing for almost 110 years?

St. John Elementary School was a Catholic school build in 1916 as a bungalow school design with Georgian Revival style with only four classrooms. By the end of the first school year, the four room school was overflowing and classrooms were devided into smaller rooms.

After the Second World War, Calgary grew rapidly because of the 1947 Leduc oil discovery, returning soldiers and increased immigration. As more Catholic families moved to the area, the school added a west wing in 1954, followed by more classrooms and a gym in 1967.

Over the years, St. John has evolved from an elementary school to a Fine Arts school and a Reception Centre for new Canadians. Today, it continues to serve the community as the St. John Centre for Arts and Culture.

SUMMER SESSIONS IN KENSINGTON RECAP // Thank you for making Summer Sessions in Kensington an amazing event! It was great to see so many people enjoying the live music, art and community.

A huge thank you to all talented musicians, Tory Rosso, Bev Bruce, John Charles Reid and Sorrel Rider for bringing great music and energy throughout the afternoon. Special thank you to ALANA SORGE | ART leading the community art project. It was wonderful to see so many people getting involved and creating something together.

A big thank you to DEVILLE COFFEE for keeping everyone refreshed with their delicious iced tea throughout the afternoon.

We celebrated the unveiling of Kensington’s newest mural and loved seeing visitors explore the neighbourhood with our self-guided heritage tour.
