It’s not a lonely world if you’re a Raleigh enthusiast! Here is a story from the shop!
A bit of fun news from our Tuesday shift:

Some of you may have seen the grey Raleigh that was donated to us a few weeks ago. Before it was donated, a friend of the owner emailed us asking us if we would take it in and find it a good home:

Hi,
I have a nice older 3 speed Raleigh bike that I would like to donate somewhere that will take care to find it a good home. (: the body is in very good shape with bumpers etc. but the gears could probably use upgrading.
The owner worked at the University for 20 years and commuted with the bike whenever weather allowed.

On Tuesday someone had come by to buy it. She was accompanied by a friend who was very into these old Raleighs and really encouraged her to take it. He said he came by last week just cause he was in the area and thought he would pop into just shuffle through the parts and was blown away when he saw the Raleigh. It was in very good condition for its age (ca. 1973) and had most of its original parts, including the saddle bag. He even brought his own Raleigh to the shop so they could ride back together.

Anyways, I emailed the person who donated the bike to let her know we found the bike a new home and how enthusiastic the new owner’s friend was about the find and here was her response:

Derrick,
Thanks so much for taking the time to write to me with this beautiful message.
I am smiling so big right now. It means so much to know it’s appreciated.
Thank you, thank you, thank you (:

Our volunteers put tireless work into running the shop. If you’ve ever wanted to pay a compliment or give thanks to someone who helped you out, but you’re a bit shy🤭, then try writing a compliment on the volunteer appreciation board. Ask about it!

Sam is a senior volunteer at the shop, and loves to fix bikes! He is a mountain bike aficionado, and loves the freedom, speed, and adrenaline that comes with biking. When he’s not cycling, he has a deep love for dogs, especially pointer and boxer dogs. Sam is a bit reserved, which we hypothesize might be because he is a secret agent on duty who probably got bored on the mission and decided to pick up biking as a hobby. That’s one theory. Crap, I think we blew his cover. Post canceled!

Bike Root is super cool and hip because you can always find us at super cool and hip community events. The trick is to have someone super knowledgeable about the bike scene, and for that we have Jacquiline! She’s a senior volunteer at bike root who has been here since April 2021.
Jacqui is huge on fixing bikes, but she likes to disassemble to the odd bike or two. Most of her efforts at the bike shop are spent organizing inventory, helping customers out, and helping us put ourselves on the map. She has a lot of savvy for this non-profit stuff, especially considering her involvement with Bike Calgary. She loves a comfy cruiser bike, and is a lover of foldable bikes as well. Jacqui is a Toronto native (with the formidable accent to prove it), but loves the beautiful pathways here in Calgary. She loves the freedom of biking, the excellent mental and physical benefits, and the vibrant bike community here. When she’s not on a bike, shes doing something easy on the joints but still fun, like swimming or cross country skiing. Jacqui is incredibly kind and fun to talk to😊

Have you ever wished someone could call you “son” and knew how to fix whatever problems you had? Then maybe Rob can fix the hole in your heart. Rob is a brand new volunteer and has only been with the shop for two months, but he’s already been a giant helping hand. Community members come in with their bikes and Rob will spend hours with them fixing whatever is wrong. A self-described bike snob, Rob has a particular interest in downhill mountain bikes, including hybrid e bikes (pedal, not throttle!) Rob appreciates bikes for the opportunity to be in nature, cycle with friends, and improving his fitness. He’s been doing it FOREVER, and bought his first bike when he was a student here in 1985. Outside of biking, Rob used to race sled dogs and was the only guy to lead a team of sled dogs around the University’s Olympic Oval. Google it - it’s true!

Have you ever taken a look at the Slack channel and seen a description for a bike that made you chuckle? Well, you might owe that joy to Jenin! She has been at the shop for the past four months lovingly crafting both bike ads, learning to fix bicycles, and working to cement herself as the resident rusty chain cutter. And most recently has added social media handler to her Bike Root duties. While she has not been mountain biking in half a decade, mountain bikes have a special place in her heart! Jenin has always found freedom and exhilaration in riding bikes, ever since she was a young girl. Riding the river pathway has better connected her to the world around her, and biking has allowed her to get more familiar with Calgary. Outside of the bike shop you will find her working on her latest knitting project, reading both books and poetry, and writing a few sappy poems herself. Jenin is also passionate about climate action 🌍 🌳 💧
