Introducing our fifth performer for this month's 17th on 17th…

From Calgary Opera, soprano Nicole Leung and tenor Tayte Mitchell will serenade you with light-hearted opera and musical theatre hits, hummable tunes, and delightful duets! You can hear them outside Meltro Burger, 601 17 Ave SW.

During her McPhee Young Artist residency with Calgary Opera, Canadian soprano Nicole Leung performed in some of Calgary's favourite operas, including Carmen, The Elixir of Love, and The Marriage of Figaro. Based in Calgary and Toronto, she recently sang at Koerner Hall as soprano soloist in Villa Lobos' haunting Bachianas Brasileiras and Ammolite Opera's Annual Gala at The Werklund Centre. Nicole also serves as a teaching artist for Calgary Opera's digital after-school program for children, Creative Explorers: Stories That Sing, in collaboration with the Calgary Public Library, and recently opened a voice studio with Tayte Mitchell; learn more at NTstudio-voice.com.

Tenor, stage director, and McPhee Program alumnus Tayte Mitchell serves as CEO of the award-winning contemporary opera company Ammolite Opera. He recently directed The Barber of Seville with Burnaby Lyric Opera, Vancouver Opera’s Brementown by Dean Burry and Handel’s Giulio Cesare with UBC Opera, and his production of Proving Up for Ammolite Opera was nominated for four Betty Mitchell Awards and won in the category of Best Supporting Actor in a Musical. Tayte was recently honoured as an Emerging Artist in the 2026 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards.

Introducing our fourth performer for this month's 17th on 17th…

Established in January of 2024, YYC Drum Circles was formed to bring the healing power of the integrative drum circle to our own community at WRCA, and to organizations and individuals across Alberta. Our drum circles are a fun and engaging way to come together in community, celebrate life and experience the joyful creative expression that comes through drumming.

In partnership with Jessica Wilson who has lead drum circles in a variety of communities including for people with developmental disabilities, mental health challenges and in senior homes. She loves sharing the joy of music with all people.

Find them at Tomkins Park, at the corner of 17 Ave SW and 8 St SW.

Ken Drabinsky's philosophy is to create opportunities to connect with the community and bring joy to people through music. That passion has been shaped by decades of performing with outstanding local musicians.

Now retired, Ken continues to pursue music as a lifelong parallel passion, and is dedicated to giving back to the community and inspiring students to discover their own love of music from classical to jazz and everything in between.

As founder, artistic director, manager, and performer (sax & aerophone) with EH TRAIN Ensembles, now in the third year (www.ehtrain.ca), Ken has assembled an exceptional group of versatile musicians committed to entertaining audiences with outstanding performances.

For Ken, music is more than performance—it's about building community, creating connections, mentoring the next generation, and sharing the joy that live music brings to every audience.

Calgary's Howlin' Pete Cormier & Megs Benedict put on a larger-than-life duo show, singing together and playing classic country, swing, jazz and boogie woogie hits from the 30s - 50s, along with charming originals on guitar, upright bass and saxophone.

Introducing our first performer for this month's 17th on 17th…

Dan has been performing live for long enough to be completely comfortable showing up with a few instruments and seeing what happens.

You’ll find him popping up along Calgary’s 17th Ave with an open-air acoustic set built around guitar, mandolin, and banjo. The sound leans organic and unpolished in the best way, mixing familiar tunes with the occasional left turn.

It’s equal parts intention and improvisation: solid musicianship, a relaxed presence, and just enough unpredictability to keep things interesting. If nothing else, it’s a good reminder that the banjo still exists, and occasionally might capture your attention.

🍂 Hello, September!

Summer might be winding down, but 17th Ave definitely isn't.

This month, Cinema on 17th takes over Tomkins Park from September 11–13 with three days of free outdoor movies, live entertainment, and plenty of reasons to grab some snacks and settle in. 🎬🍿

We're also celebrating National B**r Lover's Day on September 7, bringing live music back to the sidewalks for one of our last 17th on 17th evenings on September 17, and raising a cup to our local cafés for National Coffee Day on September 29. 🍺🎶☕

Add in back-to-school season, the first signs of fall, and those last warm patio days, and September is looking pretty good from here.

August on 17th Ave… a little rainy, but never boring. ☔️❤️

It may have felt like it rained all month, but the clouds gave us a few golden moments. We danced to local Calgary talent at 17th on 17th, soaked up the summer days when we could, and kept finding new reasons to explore the avenue.

We welcomed new neighbours like Soloha and Holy Shakes Cafe, and discovered just how much more there is to 17th Ave than you might expect. From experiences and hidden gems to the people behind our local businesses, there’s always something new to find.

Rain and all, August was pretty good to us. 🌦️
