Episode 3: Big Peaks And Little Donkeys

Our final stop is the remote Pamir Mountains in southern Kyrgyzstan, home to hundreds of unclimbed mountains. We’ll attempt a first ascent of a 5000m peak and celebrate Freya’s 12th birthday. One of the hardest parts of climbing with kids is the alpine starts…hence we are not doing it. Episode 2: Currents of Curiosity

Our mission in the Calvados Islands is a 150 km East-West island hop expedition by inflatable sea-kayak, visiting some uninhabited islands and others that are home to welcoming communities who live a largely subsistence life. Giving our kids exposure to people and ways of living outside of our bubble in the U.K. is one of the purposes of this year of adventure, but spending time with the people we met was certainly an impactful experience for us all.

SMALL PEOPLE, BIG ADVENTURES

As parents, we wish to protect our children, to keep them safe from harm, yet risk is inherent in life. But when you learn to recognize the dangers, you figure out ways to manage the risks. And exposure to hardship and risk-taking allows kids to build self confidence and become more resilient, equipping them to better navigate future challenges.

When our daughter Freya was 11 and our son Jackson was 8, we embarked as a family on a year of adventures. It felt like the right timing, before the pressure of their next chapter begins. But this was by no means a year-long vacation; the adventures were tough and uncomfortable, and the kids continued their schooling throughout. But it was an opportunity to spend quality time as a family away from the hustle of our busy lives, and get out of our Western bubble.

Children are far more capable than most realise. Given the opportunity they can accomplish extraordinary things. This is our three-part film series capturing our family taking risks, embracing discomfort, and experiencing the world together. – Leo Houlding, Professional Climber & YETI Ambassador
