The indie booksellers across Canada have diverse reading tastes, which is why there is such great variety in the Spring Edition of The Bookseller’s List. If you love thrillers, today’s featured title The Last Mandarin by Lousie Penny and Melissa Fung might be your next great read! You can find copies in The Bookseller List display and in the mystery section of the store.

The Last Mandarin is an electrifying study of absolute power and voracious greed, political terror and personal conviction. But it is also, as to be expected from the minds of Louise Penny, beloved author of the Gamache novels, and Mellissa Fung, an acclaimed international journalist, an intimate examination of choice, of sacrifice, of memory and myths, both cultural and personal. It is the story of a mother and daughter, as well as a compelling international thriller about the precarious balance of power across the world, and within a family. And what happens when both break down.

Khira from Daisy Chain Books says “Louise Penny steps away from Three Pines and is joined by award-winning journalist Mellissa Fung for this stand-alone mother-daughter political thriller that is sure to captivate the reader from the first page. The story takes you through the USA and China with great Chinese history and myths weaved into the story. Part historical fiction, part thriller, this is a high-stakes novel sure to satisfy any reader.”

At Bookmark, we love everything that Robert MacFarlane and Jackie Morris produce, so we were thrilled that The Book of Birds was voted onto the spring edition of The Bookseller’s List! Since spring seems to be hiding from us again, treat yourself to The Book of Birds to remind yourself that spring does exist and that summer will come. You can find copies of the book in The Bookseller’s List display and in the Nature section of the store.

From the creators of the internationally bestselling, award-winning, multi-adapted phenomenon The Lost Words: a dazzling celebration of birdlife, re-imagining the classic field guide for a new generation of nature lovers

The Book of Birds is a compendium of forty-nine bird species, from Avocet to Yellowhammer, all of which are declining or endangered. Inspired by the classic bird-books with which the authors grew up, this is a field guide with a difference. It asks not ‘What is that bird?’, but ‘Who is that bird?’ It shows its readers how to identify birds, but also how to identify with them.

Erin, a bookseller at Huckleberry Books, says “Any time that author Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris pair up, the world gets a little more colourful. The Book of Birds is no exception. Macfarlane’s song-like writing and Morris’ sumptuous illustrations create alchemy together. Yes, this is a book that every birder should own—but it’s so much more than that. Anyone who needs a reminder that wonder and magic exist will find enchantment on each page.”

Drop by the shop, find out why Robert and Jackie are shop favourites, and pick up your next great read!
