VITAMIN B1 REVERSED INSULIN RESISTANCE IN A CLINICAL TRIAL.

Just 300 mg daily lowered fasting blood sugar and insulin in people with type 2 diabetes. Here’s why this often-overlooked nutrient deserves more attention.

Thiamine (Vitamin B1) helps your cells process glucose.

It activates key enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, including transketolase, which helps direct glucose through important metabolic pathways.

When B1 levels are low, your body may struggle to metabolize glucose efficiently. And research suggests people with diabetes are more likely to have low thiamine levels.

THE HIDDEN DRAIN

Studies suggest that 15–30% of people with diabetes may have thiamine deficiency, with some research finding substantially lower levels than in people without diabetes.

Why? High blood sugar can increase thiamine loss through the kidneys, potentially making it harder to maintain adequate levels.

A typical multivitamin provides around 1–2 mg of B1, while clinical trials have investigated much higher doses, including 300 mg daily.

ENTER BENFOTIAMINE: A DIFFERENT FORM OF B1

Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble derivative of thiamine that can increase thiamine availability in certain tissues.

Research suggests it may offer several benefits:

🔹 Helps combat AGEs: Advanced glycation end-products form when sugars react with proteins. These compounds contribute to oxidative stress and damage to blood vessels and tissues. Benfotiamine may help reduce their formation.

🔹 Supports diabetic nerve health: Benfotiamine has been studied for diabetic peripheral neuropathy, which can cause burning, tingling, numbness and nerve pain. Some clinical trials suggest improvements in neuropathy symptoms, although the evidence is mixed and it has not been proven to reverse nerve damage.

🔹 Brain health and Alzheimer’s research: Thiamine is essential for brain energy metabolism, and impaired glucose metabolism has been associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers have investigated benfotiamine for its potential to reduce oxidative stress and other processes associated with cognitive decline. An early clinical trial found promising results on some cognitive measures in people with mild cognitive impairment, but larger studies are needed to establish whether it can slow Alzheimer’s progression.

THE BOTTOM LINE

B1 is essential for energy metabolism, and maintaining adequate levels matters. But supplementation isn’t a replacement for diabetes treatment, and more isn’t always better.

Combine proper nutrition with walking after meals, strength training and blood sugar monitoring.

If you’re concerned about insulin resistance, ask your healthcare provider about your HbA1c, fasting glucose and whether fasting insulin testing is appropriate.

Sometimes the missing piece isn’t just how much sugar you’re eating, but how effectively your body processes it.

Do you know your fasting insulin number? It’s one piece of the bigger picture when it comes to metabolic health and healthy aging.

Inflammation May Start Where You Least Expect It: Your Gut

If you’re struggling with chronic inflammation, joint pain, an autoimmune condition, digestive issues, or a condition that ends in “-itis,” you may be looking at the wrong place for answers.

We often think of inflammation as something happening in a specific part of the body—like our joints. But there is a fascinating connection between gut health and inflammation throughout the body.

That means supporting your gut may be an important part of supporting your body’s ability to manage inflammation.

Let’s start with the foods that may be contributing to the problem.

Some foods can be particularly inflammatory or difficult to tolerate, especially when your digestive system is already struggling:

• Grains
• Alcohol
• Sugar
• Junk food and ultra-processed foods
• Corn
• Soy
• Seed oils
• Dairy
• Certain fiber and functional-fiber products
• Highly processed plant-protein products

And surprisingly, even foods we normally consider healthy—like beans, legumes, and certain vegetables—can cause digestive symptoms for some people.

When your gut is irritated, sometimes simplifying your diet for a period of time can help you figure out what your body is and isn’t tolerating. For some people, this may mean temporarily following a very simple, animal-based or carnivore-style diet under appropriate guidance.

Now let’s talk about supporting the gut.

One of the terms you may have heard is intestinal permeability, often referred to as “leaky gut.”

Your intestinal lining is an incredibly important barrier. It helps control what passes from your digestive tract into the rest of your body.

This is where Glutamine comes in

Glutamine is an amino acid that serves as an important fuel source for cells lining the digestive tract. Your body makes glutamine, but you also get it naturally from food.

Foods that provide glutamine include:

🥩 Beef
🥚 Eggs
🐟 Fish
🥛 Kefir
🐐 Sheep and goat cheese
🦴 Bone broth

And for those following a vegetarian or vegan diet, cabbage—especially red cabbage—is another food that provides glutamine. It also contains a variety of other beneficial plant compounds.

So when we talk about fighting inflammation, I don’t think we should be looking for one magical food.

We need to look at the bigger picture.

What are you eating every day?
How is your digestion?
Are certain foods making your symptoms worse?
And are you giving your gut the nutrients it needs to function properly?

Because sometimes, supporting your health means starting where the problem may actually begin—inside the gut. ❤️
