They were calling for flurries, then upgraded to “2-5cm light snow” (by 05:30 there was well over two inches of powder:/) to continue ‘til around 08:00 and turn back to a few flurries... But this is not the main event. Apparently that’s not until Tuesday morning. 10-15cm with a mix of ice pellets and snow
Here we go again... How’s it going over your way, Susan McDonald?

4:36a WINTER STORM WATCH ISSUED by Environment Canada

(Locations listed below description)

Snowfall amounts of 25 to 35 cm and blowing snow tuesday into wednesday.

Snow will begin tuesday morning. Strong easterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h will cause reduced visibilities in blowing snow. Total snowfall amounts of 25 to 35 cm are likely before the snow tapers off during the day wednesday.

This snow is associated with a colorado low that will cross southern ontario tuesday and wednesday.

Avoid travel if possible. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone.

Winter storm watches are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.

8:35p SNOW SQUALL WARNING ISSUED by Environment Canada

(Locations listed below description)

Snow squalls will continue to intensify tonight and continue into thursday.

Heavy lake effect snow bands off lake huron will give snowfall accumulations near 15 centimetres by midday thursday over some portions of the bruce peninsula. Blowing snow will also cause hazardous travel conditions.

Okay, so you missed finding that sneaky zucchini until it's almost big enough to play baseball, now what? Well, one thing to remember: if you're not getting new flowers, it means you've got a fruit hiding in there somewhere, so have a good look. (Young zucchini are a lovely glossy green and easier to spot; so pick young and pick often; ) But seriously, there are lots of uses for these big ones. As long as the skin hasn't gotten too tough to be anything other than compost. Once they start producing seeds the texture becomes pulpy and flavour turns bitter:/
One great recipe for "it's too hot to cook!" weather is stuffed Zuccchini Boats: ) The single recipe here only calls for 1/2lb of zucchini; so just (guess-timate; ) whether you need to double or triple the filling to suit the size of your zukes (but there's really no such thing as "too much" filling; ) When we bake ours on a sheet pan using the "indirect heat/burner turned-off side" in the BBQ, each 1/2 is wrapped separately in foil to "steam cook" - then opened to check for "done-ness" before adding the cheese garnish and back in for a final browning - **but please be VERY CAREFUL of STEAM when opening the foil packets!**
These also freeze really well for make-ahead dinners (make once, eat twice!: ) and you can definitely substitute other sorts of protein: ground beef for lamb, cheddar instead of parm or vegetarian preference: ) *190°C=375°F* http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/5614/baked-stuffed-courgettes.aspx
Orrr, if they're truly monstrous and too big to even fit the roast pan, you could give this Bernardin Canning Recipe a try. Zesty Zucchini Relish (YUM!!!) keeps for a really long time and is one of my all-time favourite pickling recipes: ) https://www.bernardin.ca/recipes/en/zucchini-relish.htm , , , ,

Courgette ‘boats’ filled with a hearty rice and minced lamb stuffing make a satisfying yet healthy meal.

On heat stress & watering potted plants:
So, because this has been on a lot of peoples' minds this week, I'm sharing a response on heat stress and watering - but most especially watering potted plants... "Having a rain barrel is SO helpful for watering - in so many ways - but especially for potted plants... Water from the hose, particularly town/city water which is loaded with things a plant won't like, can at first be scaldingly hot and then shockingly ice cold! Far, far better to use free water from Mother Nature that's at the perfect temperature, contains everything a plant needs to drink and nothing it doesn't. Water early - plants use a LOT of water while growing overnight. Have a saucer under each pot so you're not wasting your precious rainwater and so any excess can drain away, but the plant can pull it back up into the soil at its leisure. Give all pots just a little at first (to allow soil to open up for more) then go back around and give more a few minutes later. If there's water still sitting in the saucer after 20 minutes, dump it out so your plants' roots don't suffocate and drown. Once watered thoroughly, "weigh" what a fully soaked pot "feels" like and don't water again until it "feels" like it needs more - too much water is just as bad as not enough... Finally, listen to Ed Lawrence on CBC Radio One, Ontario Today on Mondays after the 1 o'clock news... 'Cause that's where I gleaned all of this information (and learn more every time I listen in; ) "
Shown here, currently in her Summer home, all tucked into the shade of a massive Burdock, is my St. Patrick's Day Shamrock 'Oxalis regnellii' all covered in regrowth since going outside. (And yeah, weird I know, but I actually do grow Burdock on purpose; )
I am truly not sure how old she is (10 maybe?) but got up-potted and fresh soil before going outside again this year: ) She sits on my kitchen windowsill most of the year and usually starts to bloom just in time for St. Patrick's Day: ) Here's a little (23 second) video you might enjoy on how Oxalis respond to daylight: https://youtu.be/P9WaauuYEu4
