From the mid-1950s to the early 1970s, Japan was entering a period of rapid economic growth. Alongside this economic expansion, technological innovation flourished in Japan, leading to a surge in motorcycle exports. As more motorcycles were exported, people around the world came to admire large-displacement, high-performance Japanese motorcycles. Motorcycles gradually became more popular with Japanese youth, and once the oil crisis of the 1970s came to a close, the so-called “motorcycle boom” of the 1980s began in earnest. Additionally, during this time motorcycles in the sub-400cc class gained in popularity due to Japan's unique licensing system.
