Recognize those shelves?

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of visiting my bookselling friend Kerri who opened in Victoria in 2021–around the same time time Coastal Books moved to Newport Village.

Kerri is now making use of the wonderful bookcases originally passed down to me from (what a community!) and I delivered some off our remaining stock that will become part of her collection now ❤️📚

Books and Shenanigans is a magical place. Go see it as soon as you can make it over to Cook Street Village in Victoria BC ☀️

Lucy and I were accompanied on this final Coastal-Books related field trip by the bookstagrammer Tania and of course we also stopped in at Russel Books and Munro’s since we were in the area. All-in-all it was the perfect last day of Coastal Bookstore’s final chapter 🥹

Free local delivery is still happening on Fridays on orders over $40. Place your order by midnight Thursday for Friday delivery. Delivery will continue for at least a few weeks.

(Occasionally the delivery option isn’t coming up when it should. If that happens to you, send me a DM)

I just marked down remaining books and items even further. The candles are now 50% off! There are currently 90 items in our Under $10 section!

Happy shopping and I’ll see you on Friday 😍👋🚗📕

Hello Everyone!

So many updates, so little space here 🙂 In short, I recently concluded that I just don’t have it in me to reinvent Coastal Books online and keep it going.

Probably 🙃

So let’s assume that the whole thing will go away at the end of March. Until then..

📚I will keep marking things down to clear every week. Check out the new Under $10 tab on the website!

🚙 FREE local delivery on orders of $40 or more will continue every Friday until the end… whenever that is…

✨Points will be going away at the end of FEBRUARY. Use ‘em or lose ‘em. Trade them in for store credit or a free shipping code!

Thanks for your patience while I got a solid rest. I don’t think I realized how hard the closure was on me until I had a few weeks to process. It was wonderful while it lasted. You’re all amazing! 🤗

Well it’s almost the end of our “Quiet January!” Thanks for sticking around while Danica has taken some time to ponder what’s next for coastalbooks.ca ☺️

Thanks for your patience while our website was closed for a stock-take and reorganization. I just reopened coastalbooks.ca ☺️ with most of our current stock marked down. I also reintroduced free shipping on orders in BC on orders over $125.

I’m calling it a “quiet” sale because I will continue being less present on social media while I get caught up. There is a lot of behind the scenes work involved in closing the Newport store and it’s taking me longer than I anticipated to work through it all. Also, I have picked up some freelance work to help make ends meet, which also takes time.

Coastal Books will continue operating online for the foreseeable future. There will be changes and I don’t know exactly how this will look. Thank you for bearing with me through the transition.

Happy New Year

Danica’s favourite FICTION reads of 2022!

I read 32 books this year - my goal was 40 but whatever. I skimmed through my reading journal 🤓 and identified 16 favourites. Here’s my favourite fiction reads with one caveat. I read 3 of Louise Penny’s novels featuring inspector Gamache 😍😍😍. This series has a special place in my heart and I’d recommend them to almost anyone.

The 10 shown here are not in any particular order except that the first one, Sea of Tranquility, was my absolute favourite book of the year.

1. Absolute favourite

2. I love a lot about this book but I also love that the theme of LOVE is emphasized in the cover art. Do you see it?

3. I read all 5 of the Canada Reads finalists this year. Scarborough would have been my pick to win but it didn’t. I think every Canadian should read this book to better understand who we are and how we need to move forward

4. Adventure. Adventure. Adventure.

5. Winner of Canada Reads! And the GG’s! And many other prizes including a place in my top ten 🏆

6. After loving Sea of Tranquility I heard this had crossover characters, so I read it,
and loved it, and soon will be reading Station Eleven because I cannot get enough of Emily St. John Mandel

7. One of those novels you wouldn’t recommend to everyone because you know not everyone will love it. But I did. And most of the readers in our book club did too

8. Oh. A little piece of Canada’s history. And so good. Just so good. Recommend to everyone, even if it’s not their usual genre

9. One of those books that is SO hard and SO good at the same time. I can’t believe this is only Douglas Stuart’s second book. May there be many!

10. Read on vacation and felt like it was written Just For Me. To the point that I wondered whether I should recommend it, but it has more than 4/5 stars from over a hundred thousand people on goodreads so I guess I wasn’t alone!

Nonfiction post to follow. Did you read any of these? What did you think? What was your favourite read of 2022?

Don’t worry… Coastal Books still here!
It’s just not in Newport Village anymore 🥲

Port Moody was a magical place to be, but I have decided to revert to being an online store, which is how Coastal Books started more than 2 years ago.

The Boxing Week sale continues online while I box up the contents of the store and move it to my apartment 😅. Things will appear quiet for a few weeks while I reorganize, but there are plans for moving the business forward!

After processing the initial sadness over this necessary decision my entrepreneurial brain kicked into gear and I’ve been reimagining a better way forward. I truly am looking forward to what comes next.

After I complete the move I’ll be communicating more about this next pivot for Coastal Bookstore. In the meantime I wish you the happiest of New Years. Thank you for being there! ❤️
