A tailout is where a pool gradually shallows before flowing into the next run. While it may not look as dramatic as deeper holding water, it often provides ideal resting water for steelhead, especially in lower or clearer conditions.

The biggest mistake anglers make is walking through the tailout too quickly or assuming it's too shallow to hold fish. Steelhead will often hold surprisingly close to the head of the next riffle where the current remains steady but the water is less turbulent.

Fish a tailout just as thoroughly as you would the main pool. Make controlled casts that cover the water evenly, allowing your fly to swing completely before stepping downstream. As the water becomes shallower, you may need to adjust your presentation to maintain a natural swing without dragging the bottom.

Stealth becomes especially important in tailouts. Clear, shallow water makes fish more aware of movement, so wade only as much as necessary and avoid creating excessive disturbance. Whenever possible, fish from the bank or the shallow edge before entering the water.

The Coho Crusher is a modern take on the classic Muddler Minnow, reimagined as a jig style attractor for aggressive coho salmon. Tied on a jig hook with a tungsten bead, it rides hook point up, gets into the strike zone quickly, and combines a spun deer hair head with plenty of flash to create a fly that's impossible to ignore.

We like fishing the Coho Crusher on a floating line when fish are high in the water column or cruising just below the surface. If the fish are holding deeper, an intermediate tip or full intermediate line helps keep the fly in the zone longer without sacrificing its lively action.

The retrieve is simple. Fish it with a steady series of six to eight inch strips, mixing in the occasional pause. The deer hair head pushes water while the flash pulses with every strip, giving the fly an erratic, attention grabbing action. Don't be afraid to experiment with your retrieve speed. Some days coho want a fast, aggressive presentation, while other days they'll eat it as the fly slows or pauses.
