I-Hos Gallery I-Hos Gallery is a First Nations Gallery and Gift Shop located in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island Our culture is expressed through our art.
(201)

I-Hos Gallery presents a collection of traditional and contemporary Northwest Coast artwork, including masks, prints, gold and silver jewelry, wood carvings and more produced by First Nations artists. We are located between Courtenay and Comox on Vancouver Island, on the site of the original K’ómoks Village. We deal directly with all of our First Nation artists and provide you with all legends and

artist biographies. The beautiful house front design of I-Hos Gallery incorporates a whale, “Queneesh” and the double headed sea serpent, “I-Hos”. These creatures represent important crests of the K’ómoks people. Standing inside of the entrance pole is a sxwayxwey (kway kway) dancer. The dancer wears a mask with protruding eyes and tongue. The dancer carries a scallop shell rattle and wears a tunic of swan feathers. This prestigious dance was a privilege of high-ranking K’ómoks families. This exceptional artwork was designed exclusively for I-Hos Gallery by Calvin Hunt in 1995 and was carved with the assistance of his nephew Mervyn Child and cousin Geary Cranmer.

Check out this beautiful mural by one of our K’ómoks artists!

I haven't posted in a while as I've been healing and trying to get my body to function properly.

I was selected to paint a mural on Aspen Park school by the district!

It was a long wait for the weather to be reasonable enough to work through.

It ended up either raining or burning hot hot sun and as a very heat intolerant person, this was tough! But I did it! it took me small bursts of hours as much as I could physically handle and even with my pain and physical issues, I did 1-3 hour shifts as often as I could.

After roughly 30 hours from sketch to final UV coating, here it is!

My interpretation of the K’ómoks Glacier, Queneesh the white whale.

"The legend of Queneesh is a foundational story for the K’ómoks people, representing protection, resilience, and unity in times of challenge. By incorporating this imagery with a spectrum of colours, the mural honours our heritage while embracing the evolving, inclusive spirit of our community today.

This piece is designed to be both visually striking and deeply meaningful. The rainbow progression makes the mural vibrant and welcoming from a distance, while the embedded cultural elements invite closer viewing and deeper reflection. It celebrates the land, the people, and the values that make Comox unique."

Thank you for reading!
