The Rhys warp! Blue, orange, and red! Inspired by artist Rhys Farrell, and the amazing job he did creating the multi-sided mural that now adorns our straw bale weaving studio!

We just rethreaded our 16-harness AVL loom! A bold experiment that had us both nervous and thrilled! For the test run, we decided to finally use our stash of undyed organic cotton.
You know why we had so much of it? Because nobody wanted to use it. It just sat there looking… beige. The colour of porridge and bandaids and knee-high stockings. On a shelf full of beautiful colours, it was always the second last pick! (Long story for another day, but the royal blue boucle remains firmly in last place! 😂)
But here’s the thing: as a warp choice, it’s basically the tofu of yarn. Neutral, yes — but pair it with anything and it absolutely sings! We’ve been weaving all kinds of weft colours through it, and trying a variety of treadling combinations, and we’re genuinely giddy with all the possibilities! The handwoven tea towels coming from this warp are so beautiful… people might not believe they’re made by hand! 😀✨

🧺 Easter baskets, weaver-style!😀
Our baskets hold thread, yarn, tools & inspiration — and right now, they’re holding our excitement for the season ahead! The Artisans of Crawford Bay have been busy in their studios, shops, galleries, and kitchens getting ready to welcome you back. 🌿
Wishing everyone a safe, peaceful, and joy-filled long weekend. May this Easter bring renewal, warmth, and a little something beautiful. 🌸

A big shoutout to the innovative woodworkings of local area artist, Bruce! He created these incredibly gorgeous handcrafted loom weights for us! Like many of our visitors, he was curious about all the “things” we had hanging from the loom. He returned a few days later, and brought us these! 🤩 Weavers use loom weights for a variety of reasons. We attach them to select threads (or groups of threads) to help manage/maintain steady warp tension, spacing, to prevent tangling, to smooth fabric edges, repair a broken warp thread, or when we want to add some additional bling/colour to the existing warp! If you scroll through the photos you can see ‘before photo’ proof that loom weights don’t necessarily need to look fancy to be functional. 🤪 Anything that adds gravity, ie, film canisters filled with washers/screws/bolts, clothes hangers, rolls of tape… is lol, DIY fair game! Nevertheless, thanks to curiosity, ingenuity, and craftsmanship… the backside of our looms just got a whole lot prettier!

💔💔We are deeply saddened by the loss of two bright, beautiful, giving, and remarkable women who were true pillars of our community. This isn’t my photo of Janet and Megan, but I saw it today, and I hope it’s okay to place it here. Our sincere heartfelt condolences go out to their families and loved ones. Their love, legacy, and impact will always be remembered. Since Janet’s passing earlier this week, I’ve been trying to find the words to express it… and then only a few short days later, we find ourselves at yet another farewell to Megan. 😢 We are so thankful for the brief but memorable time we had with them. Megan welcomed us to the community with open arms. Her care, vision, and unparalleled enthusiasm for the East shore area has inspired all of us. It’s no wonder Megan and Janet were such dear friends. There truly are no words… so maybe I will use one of Janet’s wordless gestures—rotating a hand around in a circle in front of the heart and then point to the recipient… as a way to express our love for Janet. She was very the heart, soul, and in every fibre of Barefoot Handweaving. A role model for what family love, friendship, joy, peace, and outward living looks like. There is no other like her this side of heaven. We’re so honoured to continue in her barefootsteps. We hope to do her proud, and to keep sharing beauty with the world in every colour of the rainbow.
