It is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of a dear friend, brother, and legend in the rope access world.
Bruce Giles, aka Spike
He was the original “trailer park boy” the kind of character that entire series could have been written around, larger than life, unforgettable, and real in a way you don’t come across often. We were friends since high school, and I had the privilege of guiding him into the world of industrial rope access, even having him alongside me on his very first job as a worker. From those early days to everything that followed, he brought grit, humor, and heart into every space he stepped into, leaving a mark none of us will ever forget.
For over 25 years, he worked across the globe as a Level 3 rope access technician and supervisor, earning not just respect for his skill and leadership, but something far more lasting, friendship. To those who met him on the ropes, on site, or anywhere in between, it didn’t take long before he became more than a coworker. He made everyone feel like you were a best friend.
He had a rare way about him. He’d chirp you, tease you, and make fun of you in just the right way, always leaving you smiling, never offended. His humor was constant, effortless, and unforgettable. Every crew he joined walked away with good vibes, inside jokes, and stories they’d be telling for years to come, usually about something he said, did, or somehow both at once.
He was truly one of a kind.
You could always count on hearing “Rock and Roll” from him, whether things were going smoothly or sideways, it was his way of keeping spirits up and pushing forward. And if he ever called you “Bag,” you knew you had made it into his circle. That was his way of saying you were solid, trusted… one of the good ones.
To his friends across the rope access community and around the world, this loss will be felt deeply. The ropes won’t feel quite the same without him, and neither will the crews he brought together.
But what he left behind is something strong: laughter, loyalty, and a reminder to not take life too seriously.
Rock and Roll, brother.
We’ll carry your spirit with us every step of the way.
Rest easy, Bag.
