On May 15th, the Royal Canadian Navy will recommission HMCS Sackville K181 in a ceremony here in Halifax Harbour. It won't be going to sea. It won't be taking on a new role. This recommissioning is something simpler and more meaningful than that, it is the Navy acknowledging, formally and publicly, the history and service of the last surviving corvette of the Battle of the Atlantic. For the men who served aboard it, and for the families of those who didn't come home, it is long overdue. If you served in the Royal Canadian Navy, if your father or grandfather crossed the North Atlantic in a corvette, or if you simply believe that Canada's naval history deserves to be remembered, May 15th is a day worth marking. After more than 85 years, HMCS Sackville K181 still has one more commission left in the tank.
