We never know what twists life will throw at us.
There is no photo to describe today: a devastating fire that destroyed a friend and neighbour's home. No one was injured, so that's the important part.
At the end of the day nothing was left but soggy burnt remnants of a beautiful home a family built with their own hands and which three generations grew up in. The loss is huge.
But what also lingers is family and community that came together, the love and support from friends and near strangers.
What happened in a few hours will take years to regain.
Fire can destroy a community but can also reveal the strength of a community.
Thanks to the firefighters for their immediate response and to everyone in this rural neighborhood for truly caring.

Water barrels are overflowing! Did YOU get lots of rain? More on the way apparently!***

As much as we want to enjoy a warm day to get our planting done... we are likely in for several very wet days!
A few tips:
Given the expected downpour, this might not be the right time for certain planting.
First, if you have transplants (tomatoes, petunias etc etc) just keep those in a protected area for a while. If they're already in the ground, they'll be fine. They might look sad for a bit, but should recover and thrive when the sun comes out!
It may be tempting to get some seeds in the ground, anticipating the moisture to help them germinate. Larger seeds such as peas, beans, corn etc should be fine. But smaller seeds such as carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, or even beets might get washed away or pounded into the soil deeper than what they like.
The important thing is to watch this anticipated rainfall and plan accordingly!
Your trees will love it, your perennials and lawn will love it, but do the best you can to avoid saturation in any containers or raised beds.
We have had several drought years in a row...so we are due for good moisture.
As (former) Parkland County Fire Chief Brian Cornforth said a couple years ago when big fires were creeping through dried peat moss and timbers: "it will take a biblical rain to end this."
Consider this our biblical rain and be grateful!
Best of luck to all of you. Tuck inside with a warm drink, and look forward to an epic garden!

S'up everyone?
Normally the first plants to fly outta here are the vines! But this year we have many beautiful vining annuals still available!
This is fun for us, but don't assume we've sold out of thunbergia or lophos (hummingbirds favorite!)
Or maybe, over the years we've schooled you about their sensitivity to colder temperatures? They await you here in our perfectly warm greenhouse, fertilized and pinched every day!
Hope ya'll enjoyed the warm spring day!

There's good news and bad news for us gardeners!
It's been a pretty good season as evidenced by the blooms on our fruit trees and (here anyway) the bees are buzzing around!
But we have a rough weather forecast ahead... ok for the trees but NOT great for a sunny day of planting 😆
We keep begging Mother Nature to give us rain at night and sunshine during the day! But she ain't always listening to us.
Given whatever weather comes our way, you can't move your trees BUT you can keep an eye on the forecast and move your containers/baskets into a protected area.
We check the weather forecast multiple times in a single day, and act accordingly.
Lots of plants have moved out of this greenhouse. We hope and pray that they will thrive in your garden!
If you have any questions about how to keep them safe... please reach out.
And if any of you seasoned gardeners have suggestions about making your way through an Alberta spring... please share!!

At this time of year, most greenhouses do begin to thin out a bit (as you may have noticed😆)
Here at Baraka Gardens, we have plenty of gorgeous healthy plants to still choose from. This little cluster was easily pulled together for a customer's large planter.
Our annuals and perennials just get bigger and healthier and more gorgeous with each passing day.
2nd photo is an "ice plant" or "Livingston Daisy."
These sprawling plants aren't much to look at in the beginning but, when they bloom, the flowers glisten in the sun as does the foliage! (Which is why they are called ice-plants because it looks as if there are sparkles of snow on the leaves!)

So yes, there are a few items we're sold out of, but lots of fun shopping in the coming days!
Thanks to all of you who continue to support local, independent businesses ❤️

Look how excited young Parker is at the array of beautiful hanging baskets still for sale! (We were too focused on a shot of his face, we neglected to zone in on the actual baskets😅)
Start 'em young! The children, so they grow up loving gardening, AND your plants!
Its time to seed your vegetable garden! You can always buy starts from us (peas, corn, beans etc) but if you get on it quickly enough, you won't have to buy our 6-packs of peas etc 😆
Always the diligent marketers here at Baraka Gardens haha!

What a groovy day!
Lots of hanging baskets flew out the door (still a good variety left). Bedding plants, tomatoes, etc etc.
The morning started slow, so worked on more transplanting but, by noon, everyone was fully redirected to customer service!
Mid-day got a little wonky but we feel confident that everyone left with the plants they hoped for... and got good customer service.
We judge it by the smile on your face as we helped you carry out your hanging baskets, your gorgeous bedding plants, dozens of healthy tomato plants etc etc.
Thank you everyone who shared our Baraka moments!!

There are so many reasons to love marigolds!
A) they are cute as heck.
B) they repell bad bugs but attract good bugs (really wish WE could do that!)
C) they help keep away pests such as voles
D) They are cute as heck! Yes, already said that but it bears repeating!

There are so many gorgeous marigold colours that will pop out in your garden. We plant them amongst our vegetables for their beneficial attributes and also, yup, cute as heck!

We still have lots of fun varieties! Come have a look!

Have you been having problems with deer in your garden?
We have a proven and lovely solution: Parfum d'Ethiopia!

Last year, being a lover of silver plants, Vanessa, a friend and regular customer, purchased several for her garden.
She called to ensure we ordered them again this year because, as a bonus to their beauty, they kept the deer away!
This Artemesia was planted in the garden of her property near Wildwood where she has always been bedeviled by hungry deer!
Many plants are deer RESISTANT but this one is a deer REPELLANT!
It's certainly a more peaceful option than a shotgun!😆

*** Edit to this post as of 3pm... we may have to limit the number you purchase to 5 per customer. They're moving fast!!!***

**** Edit to post as of 5:10 pm. Thanks to all of you who read to the end and entered our draw. Watch the video for results!
And, FYI, some of you posted in chat... so we almost missed those. Its a little easier for us if u just use the comment section on FB.
Thanks again everyone!****

Yes! Once again we have many many tomatoes... a FOREST of tomatoes😆
We do not grow just any ol' tomato. Over the years we have curated a reliable selection and each year we select some different varieties to try.
For example, the Galahad is a bush-beefsteak "type." Not your regular "Bush Beefsteak" which is ok... but not as great as newer options. The seeds are more expensive but worth it. The Galahad is an AAS winner (which means alot!) very high-yielding, firm but juicy and delicious with a very high resistance to disease and "cracking."
It's one of 3 bush-beefsteak-type tomatoes we've trialed over the years and which we call our "trifecta"... Galahad, Hy-Beef, and Grand Marshall.
And then, there's the Romas. Again, we don't seed the less expensive, generic Romas. We have discovered some incredibly delicious and high-producing, disease-resistant varieties such as Bellatrix.
Every winter, when we order seeds, we research the most exciting tomatoes! Our goal is to provide a selection that will give you a great harvest!
Our tomato plants are a titch more expensive than say, a box store, but they are grown to be brilliant! From the seed selection, to the transplanting, the perfect fertilizer and the on-going care, we feel confident that your harvest will be tremendous!
That said, it ain't always easy to shop tomatoes here because the names of the plants may be unfamiliar to you. But we are always delighted to give you a guided tour of our tomato selections!
We stagger our seeding so some are younger and in 6-packs but others may be more advanced in 3" pots and up to gallon pots.
As evidenced by the final picture, some of our tomatoes in 3" pots desperately need transplanting. We are likely to swing a deal on those ones so we don't have to do the work bahaha.
And... as always, we have a delightful selection of heirloom tomatoes!!!
We love tomatoes as much as we love peppers. But that's a whole other post 🤣
Again, we're offering a reward to those of you who actually read to the end of the post! We will draw from 3 of you who post a comment about a specific tomato we mentioned above to win a healthy tomato of your choice in a 3" pots!!
