Winter is coming which means so is our busy season!

We need all hands on deck and lots of volunteers to help us keep up to what's washing ashore. Maybe you just want to do one clean up a year or you're crazy like us and you want to be out every weekend. Maybe you can't be on the shoreline, and there's other ways you want to help... it is all needed!

We got our Level One Sea Kayak Course! 🌊

This past weekend 5 of our Team Leaders headed out on the water to learn how to sea kayak. Every one of them passed and every one of them picked up a bit of marine debris along the way. (We just can't help ourselves!)

I was very happy to send them out with Eleanor because she really is a fantastic, patient and knowledgeable instructor. Here's the thing - even if these folks never get on a kayak again, the skills and experiences they gained will help us in our mission of cleaning the shorelines.

Side story: Eleanor might not realize it, but she is a big part of how the Scotian Shores story began. Beyond being amazing on the water, her passion for the health of our planet is unmistakable. Eleanor was one of the first people in my life who wasn't afraid to speak up for the Earth and seeing her courage gave me the strength I needed to take action, too.

We are all connected ❤️

It's not a clean up on McNabs Island until you find a tire!

Or how about FIVE 100 pound tires!?! The Scotian Shores Clean Up Project and Propeller Brewing Company took a crew of excited to Harbours MOST ICONIC island! Together, we removed over 💥 1100 Pounds 💥 of debris in just 3 hours!

It really is incredible (in all the wrong ways) how much garbage washes ashore here. We know the Friends of McNabs Island and other folks are constantly cleaning up and we have removed A LOT of large items ourselves. Thank you to everyone who cares ❤️ This island needs all the love it can get!

After our clean up there was a super secret special party planned with tasty snacks and there may have been a few LOCALLY brewed beers 🍻 Cheers to WINK. and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron for a beautiful wrap up to an awesome event ❤️

This was an all-around fantastic event and there are talks of more in the future. Together, we really can make a difference!

Did you know we have TWO types of poison ivy in Nova Scotia?

Eastern and Western poison ivy are here. And in some places very dominant. The Tusket Ispands seem to be fullof it!

During our island trip yesterday we ran into a lot of poison ivy and allllll the different variations .... hopefully none got on our crew.

Almost 500 pounds of debris was removed from the Le Digue (Google Maps calls it "Mike's Island") close to Sluice Point, Yarmouth, !

496.4lbs to be exact and 69% of that was diverted from the landfill! Our most common finds included:

601 Water bottles
175 Oil containers
132 Buoy/buoy pieces
90 OLD Glass bottles
86 Pieces of Styrofoam
50 Bleach containers
31 Aluminum cans
12 Mylar balloons

A HUGE thank you to 🏴‍☠️ Captain Ben 🌊 for taking us on this clean up adventure today. We made a noticable difference in a hard to reach area ❤️ The Tuskets are absolutely beautiful this time of year ❤️

If you love seaglassing, maybe you will love mudlarking! I LOVE BOTH!

Each one of these hobbies includes the seeking of trash treasures. This morning at 6am was one of the lowest tides of the year so I took to the shore!

I found a few good treasures like full bottles, a marble, some possible uranium glass and even a piece of a stoneware bottle with a makers stamp on it!

Time to wash my finds off and see what else is hiding ❤️
