Let’s talk about intentionally choosing FUN. 👉🏼 READ ON FOR WHY:

I’m a big believer of creating magic during the small, mundane moments of our day. 🪄

I look for opportunities to make things interesting, light hearted & fun for my kids.

This doesn’t come naturally to me: I have to work really hard at it.

Why do I work hard at it? Truth is: it’s for them AND me.

The days feel much harder & stressy when everything looks like a chore, a task, another item on my todo list. 🫠

After seeing this creative play set up from .chan03 featuring our dino set, it reminded me of the game “I spy.”

I spy is a great way to add some interesting “fun” to your day.

In the parking lot waiting for your click & collect groceries? Boom. 💥
Waiting in line at a store? Boom. 💥
At a restaurant waiting for your meal? Boom. 💥

How fun is this word?!

I learn so much when I pick up random books at the library with the kids.

Yesterday I discovered a book called “The Dictionary of Difficult Words” & I knew I had to have it.

We’re going to start sharing some fun words we discover to add to our verbiage & learn something new together!

We’ll be Abecedarians on this adventure. 🤭

Honest question: when was the last time you played with your kids & truly enjoyed it?

Something Mark & I started doing after every market is finding ways to play with our toys about 10 minutes before closing when things are quieting down.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s almost a tradition for us to challenge each other to see how high we can stack our rocks. I think we’ve reached 12 before it falling over & causing a very loud scene & guaranteed laughs. 😂
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is your reminder to PLAY! With your spouse. With your kids.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Pick up the rocks with your children, see how high you can stack them together until it falls & then try again!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So much is happening in these moments: team work, taking turns, modelling the importance of failure & perseverance. HEART CONNECTION. ✨

Have your whole family get involved for a special family moment.

You might surprise yourself with how much you enjoy playing with your kids if it’s an activity that’s fun for ALL OF YOU.

When you were a kid, did you enjoy playing in puddles in the sun during the springtime?

Walking barefoot on the warm tar marks in the road, feeling them squish beneath your feet?

Finding fuzzy black & yellow caterpillars (AKA spotted tussock moth caterpillars, thanks goog), putting them into empty 4L ice cream tubs with leaves & caring for them as "pets." PS, apparently they sting. Good to know...

How about finding worms in the muddy culvert, or picking flowers down by the creek & bringing them home to your parents?

I feel nostalgic when I watch our kids jump in ice puddles, stare down the storm drain & find "treasures" (wet leaves, rocks, large sticks, pinecones) while they explore outdoors. Some of my greatest memories of childhood all involve being outside & adventuring in nature.

What are some childhood memories that come up for you when your kids play in nature? I'd love to hear them & share that with you. 💛

The other morning, my kids were painting with watercolours, & Jack asked me a question:

“Mom, what colour is a maple tree?”

Upon hearing Jack's question, my first instinct was to answer it for him. Instead, I paused to become curious.

The pause holds so much magic.

If we're on autopilot (as most of us moms are), between loading the dishwasher & making 500 snacks a day, we can miss out on responding with curiosity.

I asked my favourite open ended question:

“That’s a great question. Hmm, what do you think?”

“I think green, red and brown!”

“Green, red and brown? I love it. I’m looking forward to seeing what you create with those colours buddy.”

& off he went.

When we pause, become curious and pass these moments back to our kids, they have the chance to trust themselves, think independently & access that inherent creativity within them instead of relying on us.

When we ask our children what they think, we show them that we value their ideas and processes.

It's true that Maple trees come in a variety of reds, oranges, & yellows (I had to do some googling of my own lol), but when our child is in a creative mode, maple trees can be any colour they choose. There are times when you don't need to have all the answers to our children's questions.

I encourage you to practice the pause & get curious with your kids today. Their amazing brains may go on a wonderful adventure and you’ll get to come along for it. It beats the labyrinth of trying to make all the dishes fit properly in the dishwasher.

Pink shirt day started in 2007 when two highschool students Travis Price and David Shepherd found out a younger student was bullied on the first day of school for wearing a pink shirt. They took a stand against bullying and distributed pink shirts to all the boys in the school to stand in solidarity.

Let’s talk Christmas traditions! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We’re wanting to do a scavenger hunt for the kids instead of a traditional stocking; so when they wake up before us on Christmas morning they’ll look for little gifts around the house together & hopefully we can sleep in. Fun for them, sleep for us. This will work right? 😅 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
