Battle on Beaver is in the books, and what a weekend it turned out to be.

Day one was an absolute dogfight. It was tight right down to the bitter end, and every fish mattered. It felt like the leaderboard could change with every upload, which made for a fun but stressful day.

Thankfully, things came together for me over the two days, and I was able to finish with 216 inches over 10 fish. I also managed to take Big Fish on Sunday with a 21.5-inch walleye, which was a nice bonus.

Beaver Lake never disappoints. We caught a pile of healthy fish this weekend, and every one of them went back to fight another day. That's one of the things I enjoy most about these tournaments.

Thanks to everyone who's followed along, sent messages, and supported GBuss Outdoors. I appreciate it more than you know. Time to catch up on a little sleep, spend some time with the family, and start thinking about the next time I get to chase some big Alberta walleyes.

Well, Battle on Battle Lake is in the books!

What was supposed to be a two-day Western Canada Kayak Fishing Trail event was reduced to a single day due to high winds and heavy rain forecasted for Sunday. That completely changed the game plan and forced anglers to make the most of every opportunity on the water.

My first fish came off a wind-blown point on a jig and crawler—a solid 17.75" walleye, but just shy of the 18" minimum.

Not long after, that same point produced my biggest fish of the day, a beautiful 25.25" walleye, again on a jig and crawler.

For most of the morning, the fish were extremely tight-lipped. You practically had to put the bait right on their nose to get a bite.

As the wind and rain eased off later in the day, the fish became more receptive to a reaction bite. My next two fish came trolling the 6.25" Dirty Cisco crankbait in 18 feet of water while searching for active fish.

Fish number four came on a jig and crawler beside a small clump of weeds in just 8 feet of water.

The final fish was the toughest to catch. I chased a pod of fish around for nearly 20 minutes before finally convincing one to bite. A 19" walleye on—you guessed it—a jig and crawler.

One of the biggest lessons from the day was just how quickly weather can change a bite. Fish can go from active to completely shut down in the blink of an eye.

I may spend a lot of time promoting crankbaits, but the reality is that successful anglers stay adaptable. Read the conditions, pay attention to the fish's mood, and don't be afraid to switch tactics. A well-rounded angler with multiple tools in the arsenal will consistently put fish in the boat.

🎣 ICE-OUT & PRE-SPAWN WALLEYE TIPS – ALBERTA EDITION 🎣

With late ice still covering many lakes across Central and Northern Alberta, anglers are getting ready for one of the best bites of the year — pre-spawn walleye season. 🔥

As soon as lakes start opening up, walleye begin moving toward spawning areas and feeding heavily before the spawn.

🐟 Where to Find Them • Shallow warming bays
• Creek mouths & current areas
• Rocky shorelines
• Wind-blown banks
• Neck-down areas leading into spawning zones

Most fish will hold in surprisingly shallow water this time of year, often 3–10 feet deep.

🌡️ Water Temps & Spawning Pre-spawn movement usually starts when water temps climb into the 34–42°F (1–5°C) range.

Most walleye begin spawning around 42–50°F (5–10°C) depending on the lake, weather, and strain of fish. Rocky shorelines, current areas, and rivers often warm first and become key staging zones before the spawn.

Cold water means slowing things down. Long pauses, slow retrieves, and subtle movements usually get more bites during pre-spawn conditions.

🌬️ Don’t Ignore the Wind Wind pushes baitfish into shorelines and activates feeding fish. Some of the best spring walleye spots are muddy, wind-blown banks.

⏰ The Bite Window Can Be Short Ice-out fishing changes FAST. One warm stretch can completely turn a lake on overnight, especially during pre-spawn movement.
