Linen is beautiful to sew and wear — but it definitely has a few quirks. ✂️

A few small choices during cutting, sewing, and pressing can make the difference between a linen piece you love for years and one that shrinks, twists, frays, or shows marks you didn’t expect.

A few mistakes to watch for:
• Skipping the prewash — linen can shrink, so wash and dry it the way you plan to care for the finished garment before cutting.
• Using the wrong needle — a fresh universal needle is a great starting point for most mid-weight linens.
• Ignoring the grainline — even slightly off-grain pieces can twist or hang unevenly.
• Using the wrong marking tools — always test first, especially on darker or textured linen.
• Leaving seams unfinished — linen loves to fray, so plan your seam finish from the start.
• Rushing with the seam ripper — slow, careful unpicking helps protect linen’s weave.

Linen isn’t necessarily difficult — it just rewards a little extra care. Once you know what it needs, you can get that beautiful drape, texture, and polished finish we all love.
