You may be wondering how the plastic bag bans are making a difference. According to a February 2019 report from the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery "Before local and statewide bans were implemented in California, plastic bags constituted 8% to 10% of litter picked up during a coastal cleanup day - three years after a Los Angeles ordinance went into effect and a year after a statewide ban, 3.87% of coastal cleanup litter was plastic bags."

One small town on the northern edge of the Bonavista Bay is launching a big effort to cut down on single-use plastics. The town of New-Wes-Valley has purchased roughly 800 reusable shopping bags to give to its residents free of charge, with the plan to reduce the amount of plastic shopping bags heading to their landfill.
