Vines Wine Merchants

Vines Wine Merchants One of Alberta's most qualified wine boutiques with 4 certified sommeliers, a glorious whisky wall and a superb selection of wine, spirits and craft beers

Wouldn't it be fun… to come to a local wine shop where you can find neat wines with interesting character and staff that knows about wine? You’ll be hard-pressed (wine pun intended!) to find a more knowledgeable or more enthusiastic group of people to show you around a wine shop and help point out some of the great value and award-winning wines on the shelves. Having fun selling great wines since

2004

After a long, hard day of wine tasting, there’s nothing better than a refreshing beer. So, come check out our import and spcialty beer selections. You’re also going to love our single malt offerings. We have an entire wall devoted to everything from a selection of silent still bottles (distilleries that are now closed) to 40-year-old Highland Park! There are over 120 hard-to-find and outstanding bottles to choose from.

We had a grand tasting last night here at Vines with guest speaker Jean Philippe Turcheon, Canada's Export Director for Gerard Bertrand, the Star of Languedoc.

He began explaining and describing the history of the Languedoc region along with how Gerard Bertrand has now become the Star of the Languedoc

Here are the 7 wines presented:
2012 Carignan Reserve Speciale Vieilles Vignes
followed by three wonderful expressions of different terroirs:
2012 Grand Terroir Pic St. Loup
2010 Grand Terroir Montpeyroux
2011 Grand Terroir Tautavel
Then JP explained how the next two differed from the previous:
2012 Domaine de Cigalus Blanc
2011 Domaine de Cigalus Rouge
We finished with a surprise pouring of their super premium
2011 La Forge

What an ending!

70% mourvedre, 15% cabernet sauvignon, 15% grenache
A delicious 94 Points from Robert Parker, "this amazing red displays notes of lead pencil, acacia flowers, black raspberries, blueberries & black currants. Full bodied, stunningly pure and textured, this intense 2012 tastes likes it should cost three to five times as much."

2012 Domaine Gardies Mas Las Cabes-Cotes du Roussilon

Southern France is starting to export beautiful premium style wines. This Cotes du Rousillon is such a perfect example.

Mas Las Cabes is a fifteen hectares vineyard bought by the family Gardiés in 1990. This terroir near the village of Espira de l’Agly in Roussillon is constituted of decomposed black schists.

With a 50% Syrah 30%, Grenache noir 10%, Carignan 10%, Mourvèdre blend, all organic, this wine has a multi layeredcomplexity of violets, liquorice and olive’s notes with very soft tannins and fruity notes.

Food matching, few ideas: grilled meat, duck breast, lamb chops, cheese

2012 Tarima Monastrell from the coastal Alicante region of Spain. What i enjoy about this wine is both the refreshing acidity and the black fruit.

Great new product available here at Vines
2012 Romanico (100% tempranillo) from the Toro region of Spain.
Robert Parker himself gives this beauty 92pts, describing its "a full-bodied, opaque purple-colored wine with superb richness as well as lots of blackberry, charcoal and cassis intermixed with licorice, new saddle leather, pepper and bouquet garni. This nearly viscous red should drink beautifully for 7-10 years."
