TECH TUESDAY -- IT’S ALL IN THE CONNECTION

It’s the little details, right down to the contact points, that can make or break a show.

Our Gear Guy is giving this well-travelled 48-channel cable a fresh start. Each balanced audio channel requires three connections, meaning there are 144 individual pins that must be properly installed and ready to perform every time the cable is put into service.

After roughly 15 years of use, wear inside the connector can lead to unreliable connections and problems when the cable is needed most. Rather than waiting for a failure, the old end is being replaced with a new connector and 144 new contact pins.

It’s careful and detailed work, but the result is a dependable cable ready to return to service.

Good maintenance often happens behind the scenes. The audience may never see it, but they certainly notice when it hasn’t been done.

THROWBACK THURSDAY — B.B. KING, MAY 1998

Every photograph in the Allstar archives has a story. This one somehow made its way into my office, where it has been hanging around and attracting plenty of comments.

Then last week marked what would have been B.B. King’s birthday, and the timing suddenly felt just right.

Today’s Throwback Thursday looks back at this picture and a couple of shows Allstar worked with B.B. King and his beloved guitar, Lucille, in May 1998.

A soundboard recording from those shows has also made the rounds. Hearing his band warm up the room is impressive enough, but the moment B.B. walks onto the stage and begins to play still brings goosebumps and makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck.

A remarkable artist, an unmistakable sound and another special piece of Allstar history.

Remembering the King of the Blues.
