Steinway helped define the modern piano we know today.

In the 1850s, Steinway & Sons introduced a revolutionary approach to piano design: combining an overstrung scale with a highly developed full cast-iron frame.

THE OVERSTRUNG SCALE
Patented for the Steinway grand piano in 1859, the bass strings crossed over the other strings, allowing them to be longer and positioning the bridges more advantageously on the soundboard.

The result? Greater depth, resonance and power.
