This line from Kim really stayed with us. So many families are waiting for spaces that feel more accessible, more welcoming, and more realistic for their children.

And often, change starts with someone noticing:

This doesn’t work for everyone. Then asking: What could we build instead?

Going from “someone should do something” to “maybe we can start.”

Listen to our full conversation with Kim from Ability Hive on Neurodiversally Speaking.

🎙️ It’s officially live!

I had an absolute blast talking to Brittany and Shawna from the Neurodiversally Speaking Podcast!

In this episode we talk about how Ability Hive started, what inspired it, where we are headed, and everything in between!

We also touch quite a bit on parenting and finding your path in a neurodivergent household.

We hope you’ll check it out!

🚒Special Friends Day!

On Thursday, Ability Hive was honoured to attend Special Friends Day at the Service des incendies de la Municipalité de Russell Township Fire Services, where students from five local schools joined first responders and community partners for a day of learning, exploration, and fun.

We were proud to set up our Sensory Support Hive, providing a sensory-friendly space where students could take a break, regulate, and enjoy a variety of sensory activities throughout the day.

A big thank you to the Russell Fire Department and everyone involved in making this day such a success!

We got to try on the gear too!

💜We love our town and this community. We were humbled and honoured to receive a Citizen Recognition Award from Russell Township last night.

Ability Hive has become such a dream vehicle for us to be able to do the things we could only imagine not so long ago.

We can’t thank you all enough for joining us on this ride and for your support. 🐝

“The biggest barriers are often assumptions.”

As we recognize National AccessAbility Week, this scene from Lost highlights something many people with disabilities experience: others deciding what they can or cannot do before they’re given the opportunity to be heard.

To be clear, this post isn’t about whether John Locke could have completed the walkabout. It’s about the assumption that he couldn’t.

Accessibility isn’t about pretending barriers don’t exist. It’s about challenging assumptions, removing unnecessary barriers, and ensuring people are included in conversations about their own lives.

Sometimes the biggest obstacle isn’t a disability… it’s being underestimated.

🎉We’re excited to announce that Ability Hive will have TWO Caroline’s Carts available when our Ottawa store opens this summer! 💜

For many families, a regular shopping cart simply isn’t an option. Caroline’s Carts are specially designed shopping carts that allow children and adults with disabilities to shop comfortably alongside their caregivers.

These carts will help make shopping more inclusive, more comfortable, and more enjoyable for so many families in our community.

We’re proud to be bringing them to Ottawa and can’t wait to welcome you into our new space this summer.
