This is a special coat for me. I made it while I was pregnant with Chiyaachishaapaataau, 4 years ago.
It was early in my pregnancy and I remember being quietly excited as we didn’t know if my pregnancy was viable yet. We had miscarried twice before. I remained positive and prayed and prayed for my baby to be a strong little fighter. My son is now 3 years old and is definitely a sweet strong boy and fighter!
I learnt how to make this coat from the beautiful Augatnaaq Eccles from Rankin Inlet in an Indigenous Women’s Art Conference in Ottawa. I was super excited for this course and loved every minute of it! Thanks to CNACA for that great opportunity! After 2 days of sewing, I finished it and did not want to take it off, lol.
To me it’s more than a coat, it makes me feel happy, brings hope and sweet memories of excitement!
