August Feature Artist ✨ We’re excited to bring you Nina Kroeker and her latest collection ‘Community Forest’ Opening reception August 7, 6-9pm. Meet the artist 🤩 Nina Kroeker
This collection began with many walks through my local community forest. I started being drawn to study the individual trees of the forest more closely. As I started painting them, I began to notice more and more. I began to notice how moss clings to the big leaf maples in huge chunks, and how the bark of a Douglas fir is so much more rugged and pock-marked than the smooth lines of cedar bark. I found that each tree needed a slightly different handling; from expressive and thick brushstrokes for thick bark and moss, to smooth flowing lines that portray the interconnectedness of nature. I use bright colours to portray the way that I feel in nature; vibrant and alive.

In many of these paintings I focus on one tree, but you will notice it is never alone. Many of them grow from the remains of the ones who came before them. Roots intertwine both above and below ground. In the chaos and disconnection of the current world, I think we can learn from these relationships. I want to portray the individual as well as the community that supports it. My hope is that interacting with these pieces will foster a sense of camaraderie with a fellow living thing that is not so dissimilar to yourself. What you love is what you will care to protect.

Heather Dahl’s show From All Angles gives the viewer a bird’s-eye perspective on colour-infused geometric abstraction. In this work, joyful organic forms soften the geometry, while a calming palette creates a quiet sense of balance.

Artist Statement
I believe in the things unseen and that they, as well as the natural world are as important as we are. I find our societal model absurd. Creating allows me to exist in our world and stay present., rather than looking for the answers outside of myself. A sense of lightness and freedom are at the core of my practice. Lately this takes me to ideas of identity, connection, longing, belonging and notions of home. I use faerie tales and play with scale and distortion to highlight the magic of living and the strangeness of our reality. Through layers of washes, marks and brush strokes I explore until I see an entry point. As I follow that thread I often remove as much as I add. This construction/deconstruction continues until the painting is finished and I feel a delicious bit of space inside myself. I see this as parallel to our human struggles with authenticity and an exploration of the tension between presence and impermanence. Creating a painting is like mining my souI. I cannot help but be drawn to abstraction as an apt metaphor for our earthly state. But the balance between representational and abstraction in my work is dynamic. Fighting between raw and polished, spontaneous and controlled. Ultimately as I know myself to be not so different from my fellow humans, I hope to speak to the collective narrative.

Heidi’s detailed bird
studies are grounded, observational, and precise. They anchor the exhibition in form and familiarity, while reflecting the subtle variation and individuality found in nature. Her work balances detail with stylized form, using simplified environments and layered colour to suggest place.
