Well, I’m at it again!!
It seems like a lifetime ago…
I was so excited to open my dream business on the Sunshine Coast. Despite some alarming setbacks, we succeeded in opening Embellish Emporium in 2013. And you may know, that led to 3 more start-up biz’s under my entrepreneurial belt: Flourish Boutique, Cur8ed Home and a fashion truck called Flo.
Fast forward a few years… We found that 3 leases & the operating expenses were eating up any potential profits. Despite many years of operating our spa/beauty service-based business, we simply found retail (especially in a small tourism-dependent town) to be a tough go. Even after merging all 3 biz’s into one location & rebranding as Coast Lifestyle Co., we just didn’t see the numbers we wanted. Despite efforts to negotiate lease rates and terms at each location, we simply didn’t see the value in maintaining the biz so we made the hard decision to close our doors.
Walking away from any biz is really hard, especially when you build them from conception to completion & all from your own pocket. But you know what’s harder? Having the stuff to get back at it again!
Just like everything else in life, the most valuable lessons are learned by experience, reflection & more often than not, pain. But I am an entrepreneur through and through and business conceptualization & new start-ups are my passion. So this time…I’m taking what I learned and trying a new approach!
This time: no expensive leases and no high operating overhead. No employee wages & source deductions and no stress of managing staff or being the big, bad boss. No stressing of trying to diversify to avoid “competition” with other local business. No worrying about competitors carrying the same products. No expensive inventory management & risk of theft. No more constant merchandising. And NO MORE working my butt off to make sure everyone gets paid but me.
This time, I’m the maker of my own unique product in my own little home based studio!
