Reasons To Live

Reasons To Live Buying and selling books and records in Gibsons, BC. We're mostly on instagram Hello we are a real brick-and-mortar bookshop in Gibsons, B.C.

on the West Coast of Canada. We don't have a phone because I am very forgetful and things that I promise people on the phone are not often fulfilled once the phone call ends. It is a common misconception that all the books are depressing. Some of the books are happy and other ones are sad.

“In the city of Cork, a derelict Victorian mental hospital is being converted into modern apartments. One passerby has always flinched as she passes the place. Had her birth occurred in another decade, she too might have lived within those walls. Now, she notices a sign: FOR SALE. It is the first of many signs. Following them, she finds herself drawn into an irresistible river of forgotten voices, those of the women who knew this place best: insistent, vivid and true. They murmur from archives and old records; they whisper from stairwells and walls. Among them - and in one figure in particular — she may find meaning, solace, rage; her own salvation, perhaps, or her own vanishing?

A work of sublime intensity and tenderness, Said the Dead breaks the boundaries between worlds — past and present, imagined and real — to make something lasting and new: an experience full of danger, full of love and full of truth.”

I loved the last Doireann Ní Ghríofa book “A Ghost in the Throat” - can’t wait to get into this one!

“Ask Me Tomorrow” is the debut album from British dream-pop group Mojave 3. Released in 1995, shortly after the dissolution of Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell’s former band, Slowdive, “Ask Me Tomorrow” turns the shoegaze legends in a slightly Mazzy Star/alt-country direction. One of my all time favourites! Calen and I went and saw them together at The Plaza (now the Pearl) in Vancouver back in Sept 2006 (TWENTY YEARS AGO!). They were touring their final album “Puzzles Like You” and we got to meet Neil and Rachel after the show. So cool! Now all the albums have just been reissued on vinyl and cd by 4ad and we have them in the shop :)

Our new shirt celebrates the 2002 film “All or Nothing” by Mike Leigh, starring Lesley Manville and Timothy Spall. Like a lot of Leigh’s work, it revolves around the lives of working class Londoners in a style the guardian called “domestic neo-Dickensian”.

Our new shirt celebrates the groundbreaking 1972 tv series and book “Ways of Seeing” by John Berger. In the 4 part tv special, he breaks down what it means to look at a picture in the age of mechanical reproduction, the context of viewing art throughout history, introduces the concept of the male gaze, and discusses patronage of art, colour photography and modern art. The whole thing is available to watch for free on youtube so check it out if you haven’t seen it!

Our new t-shirt celebrates the 1967 debut novel “Poor Cow” by Nell Dunn, who also wrote the screenplay for the 1967 film version, the debut feature film by Ken Loach. Loach and Dunn collaborated previously during his time working at the BBC on “The Wednesday Play” series. A classic of kitchen sink social realism.
