I've been playing around with domestic woods that are hard enough for use as fretboard material. Black locust should work out for durability but most people don't really care for the look. Here's a first experiment with ammonia fuming. In theory the colour should pe*****te deep enough that the original won't start to show through with wear.

A trio of mahogany necks taking shape. While I prefer sticking to domestic woods for "new" material, I'll use foreign and exotic materials when I can scrounge them. I got this mahogany from the warehouse of a closing buainess several years ago and was just able to squeeze these three blanks out of it.

This banjo from last year was made primarily from repurposed materials. The neck is mahogany from an old broken bed frame, with a center strip from a scrap of birch found in a shed. The rim is part of a discarded walnut bookshelf capped with birch. The nut and inlay dots are crafted out of deer antler.
