The original post regarding this situation was removed from the group it was posted in, but I still want to thank the person who posted it for bringing attention to something that I feel is important.
As the person who posted pointed out, we were experiencing internet issues at the time, and yes, our customers were made aware of this.
Because we are located in a remote area, we rely solely on satellite internet as there is no wired internet available to us. When our internet goes down, our entire store and restaurant are affected. Our tills, fuel pumps, debit/credit systems and restaurant operations can all be impacted at once.
You can imagine the stress this puts on our staff as they try their best to continue providing service during a situation completely outside of their control. This is also why we always recommend carrying some cash when travelling the remote highways of Northern Ontario. Technology is great — until it isn’t!
We completely understand that waiting approximately 45 minutes for breakfast is frustrating. When the customer decided they could no longer wait, they were given a full refund.
What I do want to address is the way our employee was treated. That was not acceptable.
Can you imagine someone walking into your workplace and yelling at you or treating you badly over something you had absolutely no control over?
You are absolutely allowed to be frustrated. You are allowed to complain. You are allowed to decide you’ve waited long enough and ask for a refund. But none of those things give anyone the right to disrespect the person standing in front of them who is simply trying to do their job.
Our employees are expected to treat our customers with kindness and respect, and I expect our employees to be treated with that same kindness and respect in return.
I’m proud of our staff for continuing to do their best during a very stressful situation, and I want to sincerely thank the person who witnessed what happened and cared enough to speak up. ❤️
Please be kind to customer service workers. They are people too, and sometimes they are dealing with circumstances completely beyond their control.
