Each piece carries medicine, humour, and northern spirit — handmade, rooted, and unapologetically Indigenous. Hi, I’m Kathleen, the beader behind Aut’za’mee Design Co.! Of Dene and European descent, I was born in Hay River, NT, and have always loved anything that lets my creativity shine. When my Auntie taught me how to bead, it was game over—I fell in love with the art, and I’ve been beading ever since!

From Folk on the Rocks to Ontario 🌸

These beauties are headed to someone I met in Yellowknife who still holds the North close to her heart...kinda like me 🩷

And that feels like a pretty good place for them to land 🛬

A little story behind this piece...

After creating my large wall hanging for my live artist event, I was inspired to make a smaller framed version. I absolutely loved how it turned out, but after a couple of people told me, "I would've bought it if it was a necklace," I had a brief moment of... absolutely not second guessing myself. 😂

Art is funny that way. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, and I knew the right person would find it when the time was right 💙

Turns out, she was 12 hours north 🚗

The lovely K wasn't planning on buying beadwork that day, but she told me this would be the very first new piece of art in her new home when she moves in this September. I can't think of a more meaningful compliment ✨️✨️✨️

I'm truly honoured that you chose an original Autzamee piece to be part of your new beginning. I hope your home is filled with laughter, good food, and memories that last a lifetime. ❤️

Thank you for supporting this little big brown girl's dream. It means more than you'll ever know 🫶

Disclaimer: last photo of it in the wild.
I got the chance to use it as part of my display/show it off, for tradeshow I was a part of for my newest venture 🤞

Reasons to unfollow me...

• I will make you want to start beading.
• I'll probably convince you that you need a medicine bag.
• My bead hauls are out of control.
• I talk to my beadwork.
• I'll keep making weird little things because my brain won't let me stop.
• I think bolo ties are cool.
• I'll show you way too many tiny beads.

Okay... I'm not even kidding. If I lived in the same city as this lovely human, I'd probably force her to be my friend 😂...

Okay... I'm not even kidding. If I lived in the same city as this lovely human, I'd probably force her to be my friend 😂

She had the happiest, most positive energy, and we just clicked. Those are the kinds of interactions that make these markets so special ✨️✨️✨️

She left with one of my moosehide bracelets and this little tufted heart charm necklace, which was clearly made for her because... have you seen the outfit she was wearing?! It couldn't have been a better match if I tried 🩷🤍🖤

These weekends remind me that this is so much bigger than selling beadwork. It's about meeting people, sharing stories, laughing with strangers who somehow don't feel like strangers for very long. Y'all keep me coming back, and more importantly, you keep me creating. It genuinely breathes life into me 🫶

So THANK you... from the bottom of my black heart with little hints of pink. 🖤🩷

One thing I heard over and over again this weekend was, "I've never seen anything like these bracelets," or "I've never seen charm necklaces like this before."

That honestly means a lot because I spend a ridiculous amount of time dreaming up new ideas. Most days it keeps me awake at night. Creating something people haven't seen before is one of my favourite parts of this journey 🪡

I'm realistic enough to know that one day I'll probably see versions of these designs pop up elsewhere. That's just part of putting your work out into the world. But for now... I'm just going to keep doing what I do best, creating from my own little brain and hoping you remember where you saw them first. 😉 So these black eye bags I'm rocking on the daily are actually worth something 😫

You know those people you meet and instantly feel like you've known forever? She was one of them 💖

She walked into my booth Folk On The Rocks, knew exactly which pair she wanted, put them on immediately, and then graciously let me take approximately 7,462 photos of her 😂

Turns out she's a graphic designer, which made perfect sense because she definitely has an eye for beautiful things 👌

Can we also take a second to appreciate these little huggie hoops? They may not be real diamonds, but they're bedazzled and bejewelled just enough to make these strawberries feel a little extra fancy 🍓

One day though... my dream is to make pieces with real gold and real gemstones. I'm putting that into the universe 🌟

Fun fact, my husband was a jeweller in Costa Rica for many, many years before moving to Canada. Now he works with wood, but if you ask him, jewelry is still where his heart is 💎

So if anyone's going to help make that dream happen, it's probably him. And honestly... the man has already helped make so many of my crazy dreams come true, so I wouldn't bet against him . Please don't gag...I luff him ❤️😜
