💜💛 Opposites attract. Even in the garden.

There’s a reason this pairing stops you in your tracks. Wild Bergamot’s rich purple blooms beside the sunny yellow of Oxeye Sunflower create a colour combination that feels almost too perfect.

That’s because purple and yellow sit opposite each other on the colour wheel. They’re complementary colours—and when placed side by side, each makes the other look even more vibrant.

Nature uses this trick all the time. 🌿

Think of purple asters glowing among goldenrod in late summer. These contrasting colours create visual impact for us—and may also help pollinators locate flowers packed with nectar and pollen.

So that gorgeous late-summer colour combination isn’t just beautiful.

It’s nature’s colour theory in action. 💜💛

From lawn to a ecological landscape. 🌿🌼🪨

This front yard went from a traditional expanse of lawn to a layered, naturalistic landscape designed to work with the site. Granite outcrops create natural tiers on the slope, helping reduce erosion while adding structure and visual interest, while swales of river rock add form and create a natural buffer between the yard and the road.

The yard was planted with a diverse mix of native plants, along with a few non-natives (selected at the homeowner’s request), arranged in large drifts to create natural-looking waves of colour and texture from spring through fall.

Exactly one year ago, we planted this garden, and it’s been amazing to see how it has developed. Some plants were already blooming and filling out beautifully in their first year 👀 Lance-leaf Coreopsis, while others are taking a little longer to settle in 👀 Butterfly Milkweed.

The final touch was a granite stepping-stone path, creating a welcoming approach to the home. The result? A front yard that feels less like a lawn and more like it belongs there. 🌱
