The Invasive Species Awareness Program (ISAP) wants to remind anglers of the importance of not returning round goby to Ontario’s waters when captured. ISAP also wants to remind anglers that it is illegal to use these fish as bait in Ontario under any circumstances. These laws are in place to reduce the spread of round goby, as they will eat other fish’s eggs, young, and compete for food sources, affecting populations of important game fish.
If you are going ice fishing during the chilly winter months, remember to dispose of bait and round gobies properly – they cannot be dumped on the ice or anywhere within 30 meters of a water body.
