On July 1, 1916, 801 Newfoundlanders went over the top at Beaumont-Hamel. Only 68 answered the roll call the following day.
They were fishermen, merchants, teachers, labourers, and the would-be leaders of a small nation.
Their loss left a wound that still echoes across Newfoundland and Labrador to this day.
On this Memorial Day, we remember the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of the men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, and all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who served in times of war, conflict, and peace.
110 years after the tragedy at Beaumont-Hamel, we honour those who gave everything in service to others.
We also recognize and thank those who continue to serve today.
May we never forget their sacrifice.
May we always strive to be “Better than the Best.”
