Just wanted to leave some educational tidbits for some people that are curious on the background of oysters & pearls :)
Another word for "Akoya" pearls is "Cultured" pearls.
~Cultured Pearls~
To begin the formation of a cultured pearl, Oyster Farmers are required to assist in starting the pearl creation process inside the oysters mollusk. A particle of tissue or foreign debris is inserted into the oyster. As a protective deterrent the mollusk deposits layers of nacre over the irritant. The same way a natural pearl begins.
~Natural Pearls~
A natural pearl is formed when a foreign parasite or particle of debris breaches the oyster. Over time the mollusk will continue to deposit layers of nacre over the breaching debris and this is how the pearl is obtained. Cultured pearls are still real pearls. They are however not naturally obtained pearls that you typically find in the sea, Oysters are bluffed into thinking it has been breached though human intervention to simply assist them in creating beautiful pearls. Glad we could be a part of the learning curve to help educate the background of pearls! ^_^
