We’re sharing this artwork by Emily Kewageshig in remembrance of residential school Survivors and in honour of the lives, families and communities affected by the residential school system.
As a Métis woman, this history is personal to me. Before he died, my father immersed himself in our heritage so he could learn more, understand more and teach me. I’m proud to be Métis, and I carry that learning with me.
I’ve often felt proud to say I’m Canadian. Canada is home, and I know that being able to call it home is a privilege. At the same time, I struggle with how to hold that pride alongside the truth of this country’s history and its ongoing impact on Indigenous Peoples.
At Grit & Grace, we recognize that our stores are on Indigenous lands.
Our Sauble Beach store is on the land of the Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation.
Our Guelph store is on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit and the Anishinaabe peoples.
Our Toronto store, at 170 Ossington Avenue, is on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit.
We have more to learn. We invite you to listen, learn, reflect and stand alongside Indigenous communities in the work of truth and reconciliation.
