June 19th, or Juneteenth, marks the day in 1865 when the last hold-out of chattel enslavement in the United States fell to Union soldiers. Also known as Emancipation Day, its recognition as a national holiday was a result of decades of activism by Black Americans, notably championed by Opal Lee and eventually sponsored as a bill by Congresswoman Barbara-Rose Collins. It is now a day of celebration in Black communities all over North America and an invitation for others to uplift Black joy, make space, and do some research into local history and reparations that can continue all year long.

Today we are highlighting some titles in comics that honour stories and creators centring freedom and civil rights work from then to now.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to shout out the great work and presence of in Brampton. They are a Black-owned bookstore that focuses on Black authors and stories and we have massive respect and gratitude for their curation and educational work.

The work of civil rights is ongoing and our collective responsibility. It can start with our bookshelves but it can’t end there.
